Sweet. Oh yes. This is great news. Thanks a million to a reader for sending. This is located on Park Road just west of 14th Street. As the reader noted to me this area is really picking up. This is very close to where Simply Soles recently opened up.

I really love Pho and I haven’t found a good spot near me besides in my old stomping grounds of Cleveland Park. Any other Pho fans out there?

“I was wondering if you heard anything about a mugging this (Monday) morning at 3rd and R NW…around 9:30am.

I stepped outside of my door to heard a girl screaming up the street at the bus stop. The girl was on the phone (i assume calling the cops) by the time I got close so I ended up following the guy til he cut into an alley off of R between 1st and N Capital. a few minutes later I waved down police and told them where he went. It looked like he took this girl’s backpack.

I’d really like to know if they caught the guy. There was a part of me that wanted to try to tackle him and all that but figured he might be armed so played it cool. I was curious if you had heard anything about it or if you know if there is a way to find out from the police if the guy was caught.

I felt bad cause i really wanted to get the girl her bag back for her, but I couldn’t justify risking confronting him if he had a gun or if he had friends in the vicinity. I think I’ve watched too many action movies. i almost saw grand torino this weekend…lol. maybe it’s good i didn’t. I’d be curious if people have had similar experiences and how they responded.”

Damn, this is horrible to hear about. And I think it’s even worse that it happened at 9:30 am. Ridiculous. Well, I haven’t heard anything about this particular mugging but perhaps someone else reading has?

But of course, you made the right decision. You made sure the girl was ok and that the cops were alerted. That is all you can do without putting yourself in danger. I hear you though. There are many times when I’ve wanted to have a Dirty Harry reaction when I hear about some of these crimes. I think the only exception would be if you saw someone getting beat up/assaulted. And even in that situation you’d have to be super careful and certainly calling the cops/911 is the right thing to do. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

I’m sorry to report more bad crime news in Columbia Heights after the jump. (more…)

I was all for the “Yes We Can!” but I think “We Did It”. So for any other new causes lets be a little creative and come up with a new slogan. Or if we have to recycle slogans let’s use the best – from the great Adlai Stevenson – “The Thinking Man’s Candidate”. So we can say, “DC Statehood – The Thinking Man’s Objective”. Or perhaps we can update it to say “The Thinking Person’s Objective”. Adlai was the master orator although I guess he never did win the presidential elections… Anyone else tired of everyone using Obama slogans for other causes and marketing purposes (like Pepsi)?

Anyway, these signs are all over DC now. DCist has a little background info. They say:

“Over the weekend, D.C. voting rights activists hung signs advocating for statehood. Designed to look like the District’s flag and emblazoned with Obama’s “Yes We Can!” slogan, the signs were the brainchild of Shadow Senator Michael Brown and paid for by the D.C. Statehood Fund.”

I know it’s not the fanciest door I’ve ever featured but I dig the old planks of wood. Gives it lots of character.

This isn’t my favorite house but I’ve always been intrigued by homes that once functioned as stores. Do you like these homes that have the big storefront windows?

Thanks to a reader for alerting me to the “For Lease” sign on the new building at 14th and U. I think the building came out pretty well. Nothing to crazy but I dig it. I wonder if a restaurant or bar will take that spot. A part of me wishes some other type of retail would go in – you know to keep the nice mix of restaurant/bars/furniture etc. Do you have a preference if you’d rather see a restaurant/bar or something else go in there?

This is a wild building. It is located on a “historic” street in Capitol Hill and does not blend in that well. So I’m curious to know what you think? I think in and of itself it’s not so bad. But I don’t really think it works on this block. What do you think of the home itself? And do you think it’s cool to have such a different style home on a block like this? Here’s what the house next door looks like:
