A reader passes on from the Adams Morgan for Reasonable Development:

“Since our October gathering at Madam’s Organ, the SaveOurPlaza team has been quite busy preparing for our upcoming legal trial. In April 2018, a jury of twelve peers will determine the fate of the Suntrust plaza permanently. They will decide whether the plaza stays open and available for free public use or is crushed by more luxury condos and stifling the air and clogging the pedestrian/transit area at the corner of 18th and Columbia Road NW in the center of Adams Morgan.

Thanks to Joe for sending word. Could that the plaza development that has been fought for so long could be coming soon? Back in September The Washington Post reported: “A federal judge ruled Wednesday that two community groups have no legal standing to challenge a proposed development project that would raze a long-standing public plaza at the center of Adams Morgan.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Thought you might want to cover this – could be a huge change to a central part of the neighborhood.

Below is from ANC commissioner Billy Simpson on the Adams Morgan list serv:

Neighbors,

As some of you may have already heard, PN Hoffman has submitted plans to ANC1C for the proposed re-development of the lot where the SunTrust building and plaza currently sit at the corner of Columbia Road NW and 18th Street NW. The plans that were provided to ANC1C show a substantial building that almost completely eliminates the plaza. The plans are now posted on ANC1C’s website. (more…)

Suntrust/plaza redevelopment update from PN Hoffman:

“Dear Neighbor,

PN Hoffman is excited to create a mixed-use development and thoughtfully enhance the plaza area to activate the corner at 18th St. and Columbia Rd. NW. I’d like to share with you the key aspects of this development, explain our collaborative approach, and invite you to provide us with your feedback and support. The community benefits offered by the redevelopment plan for 1800 Columbia are numerous, and a few are highlighted below:

“Dear PoPville,

Have you been following the Adams Morgan SunTrust plaza redevelopment discussions? Obviously its an eyesore as it currently exists, but it will be a real bummer if we lose the farmers market.

Here’s a message from Star Hollow Farm, which has a CSA drop off there year-round and participates in the farmers market in season.”

SunTrust Plaza – Community Meeting on April 20th at 7:00 PM
PLEASE COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY PLAZA AND THE FARMERS MARKET

Hello CSA members,

We are writing to provide an update concerning developer PN Hoffman’s proposed plans for the SunTrust property where we have our market and CSA handouts.  PN Hoffman has submitted revised plans to ANC1C, which can be viewed here, under the “revised design drawings” link (it takes about a minute to download):

http://anc1c.org/index.php/library/category/178-proposed-development-at-1800-columbia-road-nw-currently-the-suntrust-building-and-plaza

Plans were revised based on public input re maintaining the farmers market and open space, which the developer learned there was strong interest in. While the revised plans preserve a small plaza, that space will be used primarily by PN Hoffman’s own commercial tenant, and does not leave any room whatsoever to host our weekly farmers market or the other community uses to which the space is put from time to time. As such, the revised plan fails to comply with the multi-year “Envision Adams Morgan” community planning process that included the following recommendation: (more…)
