Following the recent closures of Ruta del Vino and Hank’s Cocktail Bar there will understandably be many hot takes about Upshur Street and Petworth in general, let us remember that things with Slim’s Diner have been rough from the very start back in 2016. You can revisit all the ups and downs here.

Due to the private nature of the letter I’ve removed the investor letter from owner Paul Ruppert but the last day of service will be Sunday and I’ll be updating as we learn what becomes of the space.

Paul tells me:

“The current plan is to close on Sunday – but that is dependent on our staffing. We are considering our options for the future, including subleasing the space to another operator.

We are closing because our revenue is lower than our expenses and thus we are losing money. (more…)

I’ve always wondered how this space could still be vacant at such a prime corner. Think a cigar bar will do well here?

The liquor license placard says:

“New Class “C” Tavern that will serve as a cigar retailer serving spirits, wine, and beer in addition to tobacco products and other cigar-related products. The Tavern will have 100 seats inside, and a Total Occupancy Load of 100, and also a Summer Garden with 10 seats. Licensee is requesting an indoors-only Entertainment Endorsement to provide Live Entertainment.”

Got a lot of emails about Slim’s Diner being closed by the Department of Health. One reader reports:

“Do you have any info on what happened to Slim’s? They’ve been closed at least since Friday due to some sort of health inspection violation. Their twitter just says something about needing to fix their grease trap…”

From an email:

This Friday (1/27), I am producing a showcase called “Comedy Around the World.” The show has some of DC’s funniest comics performing sets about their different cultural backgrounds that they have performed at popular clubs around the country.

Friday, January 27th
Doors: 7:30pm. Show: 8-9:30pm.
Place: Third Floor (at the intersection of 9th Street and Upshur/above Slim’s Diner)

DC is full of diversity– and so is it’s comedy scene! Come hear comedians of different cultural backgrounds tell jokes about growing up in the United States, learning funny life lessons from their immigrant parents, and educating Americans that they can still get sunburnt even though they’re not white. Countries represented include the United States, Japan, India, England, Iran, Ethiopia, and more!

I’ve been getting a ton of emails requesting we do an early word for Slim’s. So here goes:

“They’ve been getting HAMMERED on Yelp and I haven’t heard a whole lot of good experiences from it. We haven’t been yet as we’re just waiting for things to settle down.”

So for folks who’ve actually been – what’s the early word? Please say when you went and if you’ve been back since?
