An anonymous entry for today:

“One of my favorite stories – Manafort’s Brooklyn neighbors complained to the blogger who broke the story about him laundering cash through real estate purchases, because they hated the terrible condition he kept his brownstone in, including that he didn’t sweep his ginkgo fruit off the sidewalk. I like to think the ginkgo is responsible for his downfall.

Angry neighbor rats out Manafort to her. Reason for her anger next.

From the New York Times:

“The absentee owners broke a cardinal rule of brownstone Brooklyn: There is a ginkgo tree near the house, and in the fall, ginkgos drop fleshy, rotten-scented fruits. The owners were the only ones on their block who did not sweep their ginkgo fruit off the sidewalk.”

Gingko berries sure stink
But please stop and think
The failure to prevent
that awful awful scent
Got Brooklyn neighbors bent
And lead them to proclaim!
The Scofflaw: Manafort is his name!
Investigators shortly came
Now he sits in a Virginia Jail
Selling antique rugs to make bail
To the Gingko Berry – Hail Hail.

We’ve previously discussed this unpleasantness a couple of years ago. Anyone starting to notice the smell this year?

From DDOT:

To prevent the notoriously unpleasant odor of the popular ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) from overtaking city streets, the District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration (DDOT Trees) will begin spraying the unsavory smelling female ginkgo fruits tonight. DDOT Trees will use the same spray that has been used for the past several years, Shield-EC (also known as sprout nip).

The spraying will begin in Wards 1, 2 and 6, where female ginkgo trees are most prevalent, and continue through Wards 4, 5, 3, 7 and 8. Spraying will occur overnight for the next few nights and there is no need to move vehicles parked on streets.

A map of the female ginkgo trees to be treated is available online here.
