Thanks to John for sending. Harlot’s website says:

“Step inside Harlot. Designed to be a feast for your eyes, our establishment is designed to make you feel like you’re an Alice in our Wonderland. This design by famed Miami designer Mark Lemkuhl (whose portfolio includes hospitality projects such as Mandrake, Kiki on the River, & Mansion Night Club). Our design features are whimsical, beautiful and the perfect scenery for a night out. Located in the Cardozo neighborhood at 11th and U, Harlot is convenient to metro riders as it is only 5 blocks from the Shaw-Howard station.”

Back in July we learned that a Tavern called Mama ‘San would be coming to the lower levels. Last week a liquor license placard was also posted on the second floor for a spot called Lyve at U, which says:

“New Retailer’s Class “C” Tavern serving seafood, burgers, wings, and salads. Applicant is applying for an Entertainment Endorsement with Dancing and Cover Charge inside the premises only. Applicant is applying for Sports Wagering with 1 teller, 2 self-service kiosks, and multiple geo-fenced mobile applications. Applicant is also applying for a Sidewalk Café Endorsement with 12 seats. Total seating inside premises is 219 with a Total Occupancy Load of 400.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was so sad when Bohemian Caverns shut down and was really hoping someone with an understanding of how special that place is would buy and revamp it. Since closing in 2016, it sat with paper blocking the windows and the victim of tasteless graffiti. In the past few weeks, however, there has been signs of life to that building. Someone is clearly testing paint colors on its exterior and the paper has been removed from the windows. There is even an old desk in the window advertising for sale (although no info on how to buy it). Anyone know what is going on with the building? Would love to get it back!!”

From an email:

“This is your chance to own a piece of DC jazz history. Everything from Bohemian Caverns in DC is being sold at online only auction from the drum set to the sound equipment and barstools.

The sold out shows for this Friday and Saturday night will be the last at Bohemian Caverns. Once the last songs have played the doors will shut for good and everything inside the basement level caverns will be sold at online auction along with the restaurant equipment from the ground floor, and even the disco ball from the third floor night club.

There is a little bit of everything in the online auction including five TVs, turntables, stage lighting, speakers, microphones, the keyboard and drum set, restaurant equipment, lounge sofas, patio furniture and more. Everything is happening fast, and by 5 p.m. on Wednesday the 30th the place will be completely empty. (more…)

A very interesting and sad story from the City Paper:

“Legendary U Street jazz club Bohemian Caverns will close at the end of March.”

You can see the calendar of their last scheduled events here. And you can read some more of their history here.

So where will you listen to Jazz now? Sad to see how many spots we briefly discussed in 2008 are no longer around.

old mural no longer there, you can see the new mural here

old bc sign
old street level signage no longer there

Tap & Parlour has opened up in the first floor of the Bohemian Caverns Building at the corner of 11th and U St, NW in the old Hominy Restaurant and Lounge space. I stopped by before the official opening on Friday and the space was looking great.

Their facebook page says:

“the Tap & Parlour @ Bohemian Caverns is a fresh and unique neighborhood bar and lounge nestled in the heart of U Street. Blending the artistic soul of U Street with the eclectic sensibilities of the District, the Tap & Parlour @ BC offers a relaxed, friendly and diverse atmosphere where everybody knows your name. Enjoy our extensive bar offerings and unbeatable happy hour, watch the game, relax in the lounge, read a book or wax poetic – whatever you are in search of for laid back leisure, the Tap & Pour @ Bohemian Caverns is where the community connects.”

And according to their Web site every month you’ll be able to vote on what beer you’d like to see on tap:

“One of our main goals at the Tap and Parlour is to engage with our neighbors on U Street and customers to make sure we are giving them the services and products they want. So when we were selecting beers to have on draft, we figured that would be a great way to allow our customers to make the Tap and Parlour their very own.

Each month we will give the public the ability to vote for their favorite beer to put on draft. The Tap and Parlour will reserve one slot on our draft beer menu for The People’s Choice. Come by the Tap and Parlour and cast your vote for your favorite beer.”

Anyone happen to check them out yet?

Finishing touches were still going on when I stopped by. A flat screen tv was going to be mounted above the fireplace here.
