Update from The Line DC’s manager:

“I would like to assure everyone that we are working on plans to reopen The LINE DC. We have been working diligently to develop the new protocols to look after the well being of our Employees & Guests when we open. Our sister hotel The LINE Austin will reopen May 21st as Texas has lifted the state’s stay at home order, and there are plans for The LINE DC to follow. We are respecting the DC Mayor ‘s orders and directions.
Also, I would like to assure our Neighbors that the Hotel Operation has always been compliant, and has exceeded the 51/51 hiring commitment, as certified by DOES. We have over 100 employees that live in Ward 1 (including myself) that we very much want to see back at work.
Thank you for your concern and for your support, it is most appreciated by all of us that are part of The LINE DC.

Ed. Note: The Line opened up after much anticipation and not without controversy in 2017. The Line DC is also home to restaurants, A Rake’s Progress, Brothers And Sisters and Spoken English.

If true this would be devastating on many levels. We will be keeping a very close eye on this, for once I’m very much hoping a previously accurate tipster is wrong.

A tipster writes: “word on the street is The Line is completely closing for good.”

The Line DC’s website still says: “In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, all LINE Hotels are closed to the public including hotel rooms and all restaurants and bars.

Please check back here or on Instagram at @thelinehotel for re-opening updates and other information as things evolve.” (more…)

Callan writes:

“Who is paying for this anti-Line Hotel driving all over Adams Morgan?”

The truck door says LiUNA Builds America. Their website says: ” LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – is a powerhouse of workers who are proud to build the United States and Canada. A half-million strong, we are united through collective bargaining agreements which help us earn family-supporting pay, good benefits and the opportunity for advancement and better lives.”

From Councilmember Silverman’s office:

“In response to a request from two D.C. Council members, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine has issued a legal opinion concluding that the Bowser Administration does not have authority to waive specific D.C. hiring requirements put in law in order for the Line Hotel to qualify for a taxpayer subsidy worth up to $46 million. Earlier this month, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) found that the hotel had not met two of seven specific requirements legislated by the Council but said the agency had the ability to create an alternative compliance plan.

“The Adams Morgan Hotel Real Property Tax Abatement Act of 2010 (“Abatement Act”) grants the Line Hotel a tax abatement if the Hotel meets seven statutory conditions. You asked whether the Department of Employment Services (“DOES”) may waive those conditions. We conclude that it may not,” Racine wrote. (more…)

From a press release:

“D.C. Councilmembers Elissa Silverman (I-At Large) and Brianne Nadeau (D-Ward 1) sent a letter earlier this week asking D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine to give his legal opinion on whether the executive branch has authority to waive District resident hiring requirements put into law as conditions for the Line Hotel receiving a $46 million tax abatement. The D.C. Council passed special legislation in 2011 requiring the hotel to meet specific hiring targets beyond the District’s First Source hiring law in order to receive the subsidy. The Line Hotel opened last year in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Ward 1 and is still in the process of being deemed eligible for the tax abatement.

The request to Attorney General Racine was made in response to a recently released Department of Employment Services (DOES) determination that, even though the hotel did not meet the hiring targets for D.C. residents clearly outlined in law, the agency had the authority to create a “substitute compliance” that would allow the Line Hotel to qualify for the $46 million in property tax abatements. “Dear PoPville,

My fiancee and I are looking for a rehearsal dinner spot that is close to The Line Hotel in Adams Morgan. We both have large families so the place needs to be able to accommodate up to 90 people. We’re looking for something a little bit more casual so 90 for a seated dinner isn’t a requirement. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We’ve talked to Southern Hospitality and Bourbon but they weren’t really what we wanted menu wise so open to others outside of those two.

From the Adams Morgan Listserv:

“Like the hotel, the Club is in preview mode. This Saturday we’re hosting a free community class at 10 am. The event is our Signature “Urban Athlete” class that’s a mix of sports conditioning and strength training. Space is limited, so please register here.

Urban Athletic Club offers neighborhood Memberships, Group Classes, Personal Training, and Community classes. Also, keep an eye out for a run club, roof-top yoga, and BYOB bike classes (that’s bike, not beer!).

For those who like lists, this is my NUMBER ONE most anticipated opening for 2017. Thanks to an eagle eyed reader for spotting this photo from *Wallpaper magazine of one of the bars coming inside the Line Hotel. It looks great.

Check out more interior photos here.

The Line’s website says opening this Fall:

“In Adams Morgan cultures intersect to create one of Washington, DC’s most diverse non-stop neighborhoods. With live music seven nights a week, ethnic cuisine from five continents and local shopping boutiques, Adams Morgan has something for everyone and delivers a uniquely rich way to experience the nation’s capital.”

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I live in Adams Morgan and are very excited for the Line Hotel to be completed. Do you know if there are plans to put a bar and/or restaurant on the roof?”

Back in March I shared the scuttlebutt, since confirmed, that Toki Underground founder and Maketto’s Erik Bruner-Yang and Woodberry Kitchen’s Spike Gjerde would be opening up restaurants at The Line. Anyone happen to know if there are roof top plans?
