Mayor Bowser dropping some big news on Friday at 8:35pm:

“An update on Dave Thomas Circle: We were informed today that the last day of operations for the Wendy’s will be next Tuesday, & they will vacate the premise by 9/30.

Onward to a less confusing and safer intersection. Grateful for the advocacy of neighbors who helped us get here.”

Dysfuntion Juncition Volume Four is gonna need an update!!!

And the miracles keep on coming!! From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) achieved a major milestone in making one of the District’s most notorious intersections safer. The title for the property at the center of the intersection of New York Avenue, NE, Florida Avenue, NE, and First Street, NE – currently occupied by a Wendy’s restaurant – was transferred to the District by eminent domain.

Ed. Note: Bisnow reported the site was acquired for $13.1 million.

“Almost every Washingtonian has their own Dave Thomas Circle horror story. Now, we are taking the necessary actions to transform this confusing intersection into a multimodal project that supports the current and future needs of DC drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are grateful to all of the input and advocacy from neighbors, local businesses and nonprofits, the Council, and federal partners, and know that more collaboration will be needed as we redesign and reimagine this important landmark.”

Nothing a little plywood and grit can’t fix. Gonna need a bigger vehicle to keep Dave down. Thanks to Andy for sending the update that they’ve already opened after a driver crashed a car into it June 6th.

“Don’t know when they reopened, but they were definitely serving Saturday evening. Dine-in and drive-thru, both. No word yet on drive-in service.”

We last spoke about Fixing Dave Thomas Circle here but it sounds like there were other issues at play here too:

A reader sends a couple photos of the aftermath:

Thanks to a reader for passing on:

“DDOT has proposed their plans for “fixing” the Dave Thomas Circle at Florida/New York/Eckington Place. They presented their plans on Tuesday night in NOMA and are looking for the public’s feedback by April 21st.”

Given how maddening Dave Thomas Circle has become – which of the five proposals below do you like best?

Which do you think they’ll go with?

“Dear PoPville,

Any chance you have any scuttlebutt on the horrendous traffic circle at FL and NY Ave? With all the red line shuttles coming through for the red line Safe Track, that area has gotten exponentially worse (although I’ve been hoping for the razing of that Wendy’s and improvement of the traffic there for almost 4 years now). I searched your old posts and saw one from 2010 about that intersection, so was wondering about any new developments or if I missed one.”

This circle was profiled for a Dysfunction Junction Vol. 4 but that’s the last heard. Anyone else hear of short term or long term plans to ameliorate the situation?

Dysfunction Junction chronicles the most forlorn, baffling, and wonderful crossroads of our fair city. Ben Ball is a transportation nerd in his spare time. He lives in LeDroit Park. Ben previously wrote about L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station.

I love Wendy’s as much as the next guy, but this is ridiculous.  Everybody seems to know this area as “Dave Thomas Circle” – a moniker that was actually coined by DDOT itself in a study. The original link is dead now…maybe that name got a frosty reception.  (Zing!)

DDOT “fixed” this intersection in June 2010 at a cost of three million dollars, and ever since it’s become infamous for nonsensical routing, baffling inaccessibility, and traffic pileups.  They did succeed in one thing:  if you happen to be heading west on Florida Avenue or east on New York Avenue in a car, it’s not bad at all – you can drive-thru.  (Zing again!)

Every other direction is a challenge.  Going east on Florida requires a near-circumnavigation of Wendy’s.  You’d think that one of the main thoroughfares between the U St corridor and the H St area would require a quicker and easier connection, even if it meant using the powers of eminent domain against “the world’s third largest quick-service hamburger company”.  (In case you’re wondering, the assessed value of that property is just over five million dollars.)
