north cap fire house

Thanks to Paul from the Arts & Real Estate blog for the heads up.

He writes:

“The Fire House on North Cap that was scheduled to be turned into a restaurant (and XM radio sound stage) is for sale. It looks like it was bought for $600K back in March and is now listing it at $1.5M.”

More info can be found here. The Bloomingdale blog has tons more info.

Wow. I’d say this is pretty bad news. I thought this spot had the making for a great restaurant. But the price of $1.5 million seems insane to me. What are the chances another investor will purchase this spot for a restaurant or an art space?

I’ve been getting tons of messages asking about Old Engine and it occurred to me I never posted the press release I got (I blame the high ABVs on my favorite RAR and Dogfish Head beers) – without further ado:

“The century old firehouse located at 1626 North Capitol Street NW will soon be home to a new restaurant concept along with venue improvements designed for hosting large and small private events. Spark at Engine Co 12 will be a neighborhood cocktail bar and smoke house with a menu of shared platters featuring smoked meats, flavorful composed appetizers, craft cocktails, and a specialty rum menu. Set to open January 2018, the name Spark at Engine Co 12 preserves the legacy of the Firehouse built in 1897 that once served the Bloomingdale community. (more…)

A reader reports:

“I noticed Old Engine 12 in Bloomingdale has some changes. The employees are no longer required to wear the goofy out of place uniforms. The uniforms have been replaced with standard DCFD shirts you see DC paramedics wearing. Also, there is ANOTHER relaunch event (they did the same thing when the bar first opened). Every time I jog by there it looks pretty empty and I don’t see anyone in the second floor bar.”

Anyone go last night?

Thanks to a reader for sending the petition ANC Commissioners Should Support the Liquor License Application for The Washington Firehouse Restaurant:

The Washington Firehouse Restaurant will be a neighborhood restaurant where people will gather to dine with family, friends and neighbors. More than just a local bar or eatery, The Washington Firehouse Restaurant will serve as a neighborhood and community gathering place that will promote community, increase neighborhood security, and add value to local properties. The Washington Firehouse Restaurant will also serve as a destination for other residents of Washington, D.C. allowing them a glimpse of everything that the Bloomingdale neighborhood has to offer. Good to see the Washington Firehouse Restaurant and Smokehouse progressing in Bloomingdale:

Check out a preliminary menu here and more info about the restaurant here. And thanks to a commenter for sharing this:

It’s been a while since we checked in on the Bloomingdale/North Capitol Street Firehouse. A liquor license application posted out front lists the name Washington Firehouse Restaurant/Washington Smokehouse and says:

New Tavern with entertainment limited to music and musicians only. Cigar Bar in the rear of 3rd floor. Seating capacity is 322. Total load is 370. Summer Garden with seating for 85 patrons.

Hours will be Sunday through Thursday 8am-2am; Friday and Saturday 8am-3am.

Ed. Note: It’s not clear to me if this is the same group that will be opening the Truxton Kitchen and other spots. The firehouse has at times been referred to as Engine 12. To say it’s history has been confusing is an understatement…

Stay tuned.

A few weeks ago we learned there was finally some movement at the old North Capitol Firehouse in Bloomingdale:

“A new restaurant anticipated opening in 2013, The Washington Firehouse, Old Engine Company 12 still serves the neighborhood today, but in a slightly different capacity, with its American Classic menu.”

Folks were understandably skeptical but looks like it might really happen. What do you think of the new doors?
