Thanks to Justin for sending: “a Hawk I spotted trying to feed on some smaller birds just outside the 7-11 in Foggy Bottom. It was around 10:30am this past Sunday. It is a Coopers Hawk whereas the one yesterday looks like a Sharp Shinned Hawk.”
If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

When you rush at the end of a big project, some details inevitably go skittering away from you.
Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6D/Waterfront is dealing with this inevitability now. The ANC negotiated many agreements which limited hours of operation of bars and restaurants at The Wharf, and now one found that its neighbor is allowed to stay open later and longer.
Specifically, La Vie (88 District Square SW) found that its neighbor The Brighton (949 Water Street) had negotiated an agreement with more desirable opening hours. (See table above for comparison of the two establishment’s settlement agreements.) (more…)

you had mentioned in a post that the Blue Bottle Coffee in Logan was going in the old Lululemon store front in the Metropole building at 15/P NW. This has changed as Sweetgreen is moving there! They have the windows covered up and says that they are expanding into a bigger space. Maybe Blue Bottle is going where the old Sweetgreen is now?”

My sources deep in the trenches echo the theory above – Sweetgreen will be moving next door into the old Lululemon space while Blue Bottle will eventually come to the current Sweetgreen space. Anyone else hear that? STAY TUNED.

From a press release:
“Pharmacies selling tobacco: it sounds like a retail oxymoron. That’s why truth, one of the largest and most successful national youth tobacco prevention campaigns, announced today its zombie-themed demonstration outside of Walgreens’ Washington, D.C. flagship store to symbolize the consequences of smoking and protest its sale of tobacco products. Despite significant progress in reducing the rate of youth smoking, tobacco use is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. According to a recent survey conducted by Truth Initiative, the national public health organization that directs and funds the truth campaign, 82 percent of adults in the United States feel that pharmacies should sell products that help people get and stay healthy and 60 percent of adults who shop at Walgreens agree that pharmacies should not sell tobacco products.

truth will kick off the demonstration at 12 p.m. EST at the Walgreens’ location at 801 7th St., N.W., with the help of teens and young adults, as well as local organizations and colleges from the D.C. area. The protest title, “Not Happy or Healthy,” takes aim at Walgreens’ longstanding tagline, “On the Corner of Happy and Healthy”. Earlier this month, Walgreens changed its tagline to “Trusted Since 1901”, removing any reference to health. (more…)

Thanks to Justin for sending just before 9am:
“Driver abandoned bus…He was already 10 minutes late, then we get to a stop light and he literally runs off the bus with no explanation and left it running. We’ve been here for about 10 minutes now and people are finally starting to bail. Definitely a first for me…
After about 15 minutes he finally came back, got on the bus, didn’t say a word, and kept on driving.”

I took 24 photos of the light fixtures alone. And this was just a pre-preview but I couldn’t stop marveling. Folks familiar and who were fans of the OG Chez Billy (RIP) on Georgia Ave in Petworth will be very, very pleased. Gaslight reminds me a lot of how Chez Billy looked like when they first opened. Not exactly of course, here we have a serious 1920s Art Deco vibe.
Before we get to all the photos, which really don’t do the space justice but will give you a taste, a few details. The Hilton brothers, most know by now, are the crew behind Marvin, Gibson, El Rey, Satellite Room, Brixton and more. Joe Reza is the force behind American Ice Company (and more.) So you know the place is gonna look good. But I spoke to Joe briefly yesterday who was actually most excited about the food. The chef will be Brendan L’Etoile from Chez Billy Sud and he’s excited about oysters. I am excited that he is excited about oysters. Joe says there won’t be reservations but it’ll be like the first floor of Bar Pilar when they first opened. You find a seat and you’ll get good service. It’s casual but not too casual and both the food and service are expected to be “exceptional” according to Joe. Ed. Note: I’ll be posting the menus in full as soon as I get them. Anyway, they’ll be opening in “a few weeks” so as I said, this is just a pre-preview – stay tuned for proper preview photos and an exact opening date soon. In the meantime:
23 light fixtures and lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
