“Anyone know anything about the homeless lady at the end of Mt Pleasant St?”

“Well, she was living there for quite some time, but now there is no trace of her. She is a small woman with a braid across the top of her head; quiet and keeps to herself, often reading a book on a folding chair by her encampment. I have often wondered about her but now am worried.”

I have been wondering about what has happened to her as well. I do hope that she is ok.

I’ve seen her recently. Like 10 days ago maybe. But I don’t know where she’s staying or anything.

  • I saw her yesterday on Mt. Pleasant St. up near Hellers, with one shopping cart full of stuff. I don’t know what happened to the rest of her camp – which was pretty big. I’ve tried to talk to her in the past but she wasn’t really connecting.

She spends time in Adams Morgan (Walter Pierce Park and other spots) as well. I just saw her yesterday or Wednesday.

On a similar note: Does anyone know anything about the homeless man with the encampment in front of the 17th Street Safeway? He’s always so nice and I can’t help but like him, but I’d also like to know more about his backstory. Has he been in the area a long time? Anyone know his name? A year ago he slept underneath the Subway awning next to Annie’s Paramount, but now he’s got quite the setup going in front of Safeway. I’m surprised they let him stay there.

This lady used to come to Miriam’s Kitchen all the time a couple of years ago when I was a regular volunteer. My interactions with her were limited. She definitely kept to herself, and I suspect that she has a mental illness. I have also been wondering where her encampment has gone – it seems to have disappeared overnight. I used to see it almost daily.

    • Miriam’s Kitchen is the best! And yes, my attempted talks with her made me think she was mentally ill, (and a hoarder) but also fairly well able to keep herself healthy, clean and functioning. I wish we could make safe spaces for people like this – meaning those who don’t want to, or aren’t ready to enter the “system.”

She comes and goes… I would not be too worried. I always offer her money, which she accepts, if anyone wonders :^)

I spoke to her the other day in Walter Pierce Park so she was there then. Hope she is ok.

I’ve always been impressed when I walked past her after work that she had really set up a home there. She frequently sat outside it in a lawnchair, reading or doing a crossword. She had a broom and mop for keeping the sidewalk clean. She generally looked content. But at least once I went by when it was raining and could tell she was inside huddled under a tarp, which seemed like a sad way to live.

A neighbor told me that she had been cited previously for harboring vermin, and that the city took all of her belongings. I saw her a couple of weeks ago, and she told me that her things were taken on Feb 14 – definitely not a good Valentine’s day for her. Her name is Sylvia, and I believe she is originally from Mexico. She does have some mental health issues, she believes that people have been following her since 9/11. She told me that she did seek counselling, but stopped going because the counselor wouldn’t believe that she was being followed.

she was across from Philz Coffee this morning.

Short diatribe on privacy: There are posts in this thread that ask for — or provide — personal details, such as names, of “homeless” people. While I am sure that the questions are well-meant, I find it odd that people who for the most part are posting under pen names are openly discussing the personal details of others, and often others that they do not personally know, or know well, in a public forum. I just deleted a long-ish diatribe on privacy, respect, class and mental health. . My TLDR: version is: please, everyone, be very considerate and very careful about publicly posting details about other people without their permission — particularly in fora where you are very careful about concealing details about your own identity.

Thank you for that Blithe. As a psychologist who specializes in treating people with severe mental illnesses, I agree wholeheartedly and likely would’ve enjoyed reading your diatribe : )

Saw her yesterday afternoon (2 March) standing idly on Columbia Road near Quarry — a block from her former location….

  • Jakeondc

I saw her yesterday in Adams Morgan on Columbia Road near Perry’s… she seems to have set up camp nearby

  • Brooklyn Brawler

Gets me wondering about the homeless lady on Maryland Ave NE (between 14th & 15th).

She also has an “encapment”‘set up. I walk past her and am
always amazed at how particular she is with her setup and items. I noticed that one of the properties she “lived” at put up chains blocking her from entering.

    Wonder what’s her story :-(
