tree down pub

Remember that tree that went down in front of Pub and the People last week? You gotta see the video! Thanks to P&P for sending:

“Our server Walter nearly being decapitated by the tree last week. We’re updating training to tell all employees umbrellas aren’t worth risking their lives.”

Walt v. Tree (Bar Front)

Two more videos after the jump.

Walt v. Tree (R Street)

Walt v. Tree

  • Nice to see the two guys who immediately jumped up to (presumably) go help the guy.

Glad Walter is still with us! No walking under ladders for about five years for him!

  • OP Anon

Walter has the reflexes of a cat!

  • Elvis’s Mom

Wow, is Walt lucky! Jeebus. So glad he’s OK.

  • Sean

So glad Walter escaped unharmed. Also, the woman in the black sleeveless top eating at the bar must work in crisis management (or urban forestry?!) because she does not look fazed at all.

  • Truxton Thomas

Wow! Nice moves, Walter. I can’t believe the tree split at the trunk like that. I wonder if it was diseased.

It was – if you look at the stump that remains, the inner core is completely rotted out. People often complain when they see Casey Trees taking down large, mature trees that seem to be doing fine to the casual observer, but are actually dying and posing imminent danger to the public.

It’s scary to me that trees that look perfectly healthy to the untrained eye can be hollowed/rotted out. I know there’s a way to request that the city inspect a street tree… but if it doesn’t look suspect in the first place, who would think to request an inspection?

        • sbc

the good news is that the urban forestry administration does inspections even if they don’t get reports. I’m not saying that every healthy-looking tree is constantly inspected, or that they’ve messed up if a street tree does happen to fall, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well UFA folks assigned to my ward knew the street trees on my block when I met them at an event and got to chatting with them.

I am glad Walter is ok, he was my server once. He’s very cute.

Seems like he should get an employee of the week award (even if he shouldn’t have been going for the umbrella). If he were a cat, he’d be down to 8 lives at this point.
