Have the Mosquitos Gotten Really Bad Recently?

“Is it just me or have the mosquitos gotten worse over the course of the summer? I feel like in early July I could actually work in our front yard garden with minimal mosquito, but in the last two weeks or so, I can barely stop to pull a single weed without getting devoured. And this is when the yard is in full sun. Interestingly, we do not seem to have the same problem in our backyard. Our next door neighbor passed away and the crew renovating her house has allowed the front yard to get terribly out of control, which has brought in a plague of aphids. Could it also be responsible for the mosquitos?”

live up in petworth and actually commented to my wife the other day as to how few we have seen this summer compared to most summers.

I’ve gotten a lot less bites this summer but most have been in the past few weeks. That being said, DC should really do something about the duck pond in Foggy Bottom by E Street. It’s totally a mosquito breeding ground… it’s been stagnant all season.

The one near 19th and E? It’s like that every year. A few times over the summer they drain it and refill it, but it always gets green and nasty.

Yes. It’s terrible. I’ve only recently started walking by it more frequently and every time I’m with someone we’re always like “Um, DC’s Zika preparedness is slacking…”

  • I can only really measure what I experience at home, and so far this year it seems to be a lot less. Our outdoor area has changed quite a lot since last year, hopefully that’s been a positive factor in seeing less activity.

Went out on Monday morning to take out the trash and pull a few weeds in our backyard in Columbia Heights. Was outside for maybe 10 minutes, so thought it a bit much to put on bug spray. I came back in with 27 mosquito bites.

    I wish I were exaggerating.

Mosquito beacon here, I haven’t been bit as much. Even when working outdoors for parts of the summer. Maybe they don’t like the taste of my blood anymore?

Mosquitoes love me. But after reading Consumer Report’s ranking of repellents I gave Repel’s lemon eucalyptus repellent a try. My bite count has been so low so far that I was actually wondering if there fewer mosquitoes this year.

I am a mosquito magnet and typically if I’m outside my front door for more than 5 minutes I start getting bit, bu this summer that has not been the case at all. I actually have yet to be bitten! I was wondering the same thing about them being better this year… I thought maybe DC sprayed or did something to prevent them because of the threat of Zika?

Same here! I’m a mosquito magnet, and most of the summer has been surprisingly mild mosquito-wise, but in the last couple weeks they’ve seriously escalated.

YES! Mosquitoes LOVE me and I was secretly hoping something switched in my blood and I would no longer be attacked as they’ve not been bad this summer.

Then I got five bites last week. It was a great couple of months though!

Haven’t noticed it that much. But have a side question. How high can they/do they go? I like to visit a friend in her 12-floor building. Can they get me on the roof out by the pool? I haven’t noticed any so far.

    • FridayGirl

I lived in a 10th floor apartment when I was abroad and mosquitos would find a way in, so I don’t think there’s too much safety in height.

A lot less this summer, in my experience.
And maybe I’ve built up immunity but even when I get bitten it barely itches
Note: I was raised on a farm, inhaled lots of dust and ate dirt and bugs (usually unintentionally). And I had pets. Great immune system!

This is the first summer in 6 years in DC that I haven’t been bitten yet. They seem to be really tame this year.
