I am consfused by this location – I would have to drive over there to understand it – Google streetview doesn’t have an up-to-date enough photo. It shows a building on the corner that looks like the one in the background but the geography as it is doesn’t lend itself to really understanding.

It sort of feels like a decent price though I still freaked that prices are where they are. I don’t love that area because it feels a little abbreviated due to the fact that there isn’t much land going south.

I think this is across the street from the red door building in the photo. It looks like a house or two was razed (or “converted”) into this building.

That was my guess but the perspective was throwing me off. They took the picture farther down 14th and it looks like the razed what was on the corner and built to the alley.

Yes, the building that shows up in Google Street view (2 story red brick) was razed, and this building was put up.

I just moved around the corner from this property in the fall, and love the neighborhood. It was not originally the neighborhood I was targeting, but I’m happy I landed here. It’s two blocks from the Potomac Avenue metro, it has a Harris Teeter a block and a half away. While there isn’t a lot yet in terms of great restaurants right nearby a) that will be likely changing as there are a few new developments going up that will include ground level retail, and b) it’s still close to Eastern Market, Barracks Row, and the retail around Yards Park – which I’ve learned recently is a great area to go to if you are looking for places that aren’t crowded (if there’s not a game or other major event happening). Also, upcoming major developments (hopefully) nearby are the 11th Street Bridge project, continued development of Southeast Boulevard, and Reservation 13 all of which should bring more park/water access and/or retail. I lived in Bloomingdale for 10 years before moving here, and while I have not experienced the same level of sense of community here (yet), the level of friendliness in the neighborhood was what I first experienced in Bloomingdale 10 years ago (which I felt was gradually dissipating over the years).
They haven’t had an open house yet, so I haven’t seen the interior of these units, but I think they did a better than average job on the outside (although granted, I’m just seeing the side with the siding now in the picture – all the other exterior sides are brick).

we are interested in looking at the units, but I’m a little hesitant about the neighborhood itself. Do you feel safe coming and going from the metro?

      • CS

I do – I go up 14th Street to the metro – there are generally a lot of people around. Just like most places in the city, you of course want to remain aware of your surroundings, but I feel safer than I did walking from my old place in Bloomingdale to the Shaw Howard station (granted, that was a much longer walk). And FWIW, I’m female of average size.

        • bll

ok, great, thanks! as a female I appreciate you including your sex in the comment. we looked at a house nearby (across from the fenced in public housing) several years ago, but haven’t really been actively looking since then.

I’ve made that shaw howard/ bloomingdale walk several times and I’ve never really enjoyed it.

FWIW, I used to volunteer over there weekly and metro to Potomac Ave. Then I walked to Potomac Gardens and usually I left after it was dark to walk back to metro. I never had any issues.

It’s at the SE corner of 14th & K. The photo is taken from 14th Street, showing the side of the building that faces 14th + the garage.
I lived a block away about 12 years ago and liked the neighborhood well enough then. It’s changed a heck of a whole lot since…

I’m not familiar with the neighborhood, but I live in a ERB development (rowhouse converted to 2 condos) and I’ll say the construction quality is very good. Good details, solid core doors, quality floors.

I’m looking to move around this area, any veteran neighborhood folks have any tips? I live over in Navy Yard now at one of the overpriced apartment buildings so not too far but surely someone could share some experience.
