Just a block off of H Street NE, Wylie Street is a single block of what were originally alley dwellings. The homes are brick, typically without basements, and small in scale.
One of the most memorable real estate closings I’ve ever had was for a home on this block over ten years ago. This was prior to the H Street revival, and many of the homes on the block were boarded up and abandoned. My clients were the buyers. As the title company began their research, the sale had to be delayed because there had been no formal passage of title from one generation of heirs to the next.
The process of sorting out the estate ended up taking many months and the chain of title essentially ended up being a detailed family history for the sellers, including heirs that some of the family members were previously unaware of. At settlement, eight brothers and sisters showed up.
That house was smaller than the subject house, which, at three bedrooms, is one of the larger units on the block. Perhaps it was 800 square feet total, on two floors. The family explained that all eight kids and their parents all lived in that 800 square feet at the same time back in the 1950’s and 60’s.
