Thanks to a reader for sending this incredible photo.

From DDOT:

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced access to The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (South Capitol Street Bridge) currently remains closed in both directions. The bridge was closed earlier this morning for routine testing; however, due to technical issues that were experienced as part of the testing operation the bridge will remain closed until all proper operations are restored.

During normal opening and closing operations, the swing span is lowered and then turned or “swung” around in order to allow water traffic to pass. Crews test the swing span to ensure it operates properly and make any necessary repairs.

The bridge will be reopened to traffic as soon as the required repairs are completed.

So it’s stuck in the open position? Morning rush tomorrow is gonna be ugly if they don’t fix it before then.

OR – the morning rush will be MUCH faster…I’d say min 90mph to clear that gap. #xgamesbigaircommuter

I am tempted to bring out our sailboat and cruise back and forth past the span, waving gaily to all the commuters.

I saw it open one night for a visiting tall ship; what a dramatic and beautiful sight.
