Responsibilities/rights regarding tree branch/limb cutting?
I am curious as to the rights/responsibilities of a homeowner in DC regarding tree branch/limb cutting. My neighbor has a tree in his rowhome backyard, however the majority of the tree’s branches are in my yard/hanging over my rowhome roof. I would like to have certain of those branches/limbs trimmed both to protect my roof as well as allow a bit more sun into my yard (as grass is not an option right now), but I would like to know (a) what my rights are (for example, can I trim any portion of a neighbor’s tree that is on my property as long as I don’t kill the tree) and (b) what my responsibilities are (for example, is it my responsibility to pay for the tree trimming costs or would she be legally required to split that cost with me)? I of course am planning on discussing this issue with her first as I would like to maintain our good relationship but I am just curious as to the state of play. Thank you in advance for any information!
