Petworth Article Club
I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a PAC. No, not a political action committee, but a Petworth Article Club.
I’ve been in a few book clubs and found them, well, boring. Either the books suck, nobody reads them, or I feel trapped back in high school English class with discussion of symbolism and character arcs. What I really want to talk about is articles, like in the New Yorker, Washington Post Magazine, Atlantic, Economist, etc. So thought I’d put some feelers out to see if anyone is interested. Here’s the concept:
1. A group of up to 6 people (that’s how many can fit into my living room comfortably) meet every month or so for informal snacks, drinks, and a chat.
2. We select 2-3 interesting articles to discuss. They can be about any topic: Mugabe’s reign in Zimbabwe, genetically engineered corn, online dating, the future of Medicare. The only rule is that the articles are available online for free, without a subscription, to read/download.
3. There are no restrictions on age, sexual or political orientation, marital or economic status, race, etc. However, we all respectfully agree to disagree with those who have differing opinions.
4. I’d prefer to keep this informal and not in a public space (which can sometimes be difficult to arrange), so am happy to host at my place in Petworth or rotate to others’ homes as appropriate. So preferably be in the local Petworth/Brightwood/Co Hi area.
So, are folks interested? If so, leave some way of me emailing you; if I get a gazillion responses, I’ll try to connect everyone to create some additional groups.
