Harassment in Columbia Heights and Petworth

Over the past few months since moving to DC, I’ve experienced verbal harassment nearly every time I walk alone, be it 8am or 8pm, it happens. I know that I’m not alone and that harassment and assault occur regularly throughout the District. The bottom line is that as a female, I don’t feel safe. This isn’t a new issue and as a concerned citizen, this unwarranted behavior is plainly unacceptable. I can’t continue to live here and perpetuate the problem in this city by not acting… while telling someone to f*** off temporarily makes me feel better, it’s not addressing the root problem.

I’d like to know what kinds of *creative* solutions women have used to combat harassment on the streets. Additionally, can anyone inform on using pepper spray/mace in the city?

If you feel like it’s worth risking your safety over some filth an old drunk yells at you on the sidewalk then go for it. But you could tell someone to f— off one day and they could pull out a knife, and it’s happened before.
