Do something different this summer; spend one night a week volunteering by playing with homeless children
Homeless Children’s Playtime Project (http://playtimeproject.net/) is an almost entirely volunteer based nonprofit located here in Washington, DC. Unfortunately as budgets get cut programs serving our most vulnerable are also being cut. HCPP is volunteer based, and therefore the organization has been able to continue to grow. HCPP is now facing more demand than ever and needs more volunteers to help fill this need.
Each week volunteers spend between 1-2 hours playing with children at homeless shelters around the District. One night a week you, too, could be playing with playdoh, blowing bubbles, coloring, being in a pretend rock band, and doing the other things you got to experience as a child: play. Many of the 4,309 homeless children in Washington DC (yes, 4,309 homeless children in the District in 2010) do not get to experience the fond childhood memories you may have experienced.
Consider spending one night of your week playing with these children. Chances are you’ll get more out of the experience than you’ll give.
