DC Boat Ownership

Hey – Growing up in Florida, my family always had a little boat to take out tubing and skiing on weekends. I see people boating out on the Potomac and Anacostia (not tubing or skiing of course) on the weekends. I’d love to get something reasonably small (6-8 passengers) like a Sea Ray or a Boston Whaler – preferably used. It would be great to wet dock it somewhere on the rivers and dry dock it during off-season. If you’re a local boat owner, I’d love some general info on making this happen.

  • Where would you buy a used boat? In Florida we had large boat dealers with new/used boats. I can’t find that here. Craigslist isn’t great for shopping around.
  • Do you keep your boat wet docked? Where do you dock it and approximately what is the cost?
  • I completed an online boating license course and got my license. What else is required for boating in the area? I assume a permit or registration of some kind for the boat and trailer. What about insurance coverage?

Thanks so much for the help!

– Brandon

I don’t have any information besides I read an article about a guy who commutes to work via boat.(and I can’t find it anymore, it was in that daily post tabloid)

I’m assuming that it will be a pretty penny, so if you want to go in with other people, I’m in.

Go to the southwest waterfront, plenty of info there. Have a margarita at “Cantina Marina”. There are some houseboats for sale, I’d expect that the same boat dealers could find you a little Boston Whaler, etc.
