Black Heritage Stamp for Mayor Walter E. Washingon
Help us remember Mayor Walter E. Washington (1915-2003) by commemorating his achievements in a Black Heritage Stamp from the United States Postal Service.
Washington was the first elected mayor of Washington, DC. A charismatic and visionary leader and eloquent orator, Washington was a Howard University graduate and lawyer who introduced home rule to the city, developed the Metro transportation system, championed equal housing and educational rights, and promoted conservation and ecological change. Regarding the political process, Washington stated: “The only cure for democracy is more democracy. When people ask me if I’ve had enough, I say: ‘Hit me with some more of it.” He will be remembered as the founder of modern DC.
