Better Neighborhoods in Regard to Street Crime

I have lived on the Hill for over 15 years and for the most part loved it. But the increase in crime this year, along with some other factors, has me thinking about moving. I’m not ready for the typical far suburban lifestyle, I want to remain car-free in a walkable area where I have grocery stores, shops, etc. nearby. I’m a homebody so I don’t really care about being in a busy or trendy area, I hardly go out to eat or to bars. And I’ve come to appreciate quiet areas, I’m sick of the traffic and sirens and helicopters in my hood. I’m considering NW DC, like Cleveland Park, perhaps even Alexandria (I would think Old Town is probably more my speed). So I would love to hear feedback and impressions from others – where in the immediate area would you suggest might be a good place to relocate with a safer, quieter vibe but still possible to live car-free?
