Babysitter Rates?

Just curious what others in the community think is a typical rate for a babysitter. I have been babysitting pretty regularly since college (10+ years) and I’m just curous if I have been charging more or less than average. I currently charge them $15/hour and they seem fine with it. Is this the norm? They have two boys (ages 5 and 2) but I charged the same when it was only the one. What do other people pay?

Short answer: Seems about right. You could probably charge more, depending on the family.
Long answer: I’ve also been babysitting for 10+ years, and my full-time job involves working with children and youth. I’m paid on average $15 an hour, but I charge/accept less if it’s only for one kid and he/she is asleep for most of the time. On the other hand, if there are 2 or 3 kids and they are awake and mischevious as children are wont to be, I often make $16-18/hour. On short notice or for very long periods of time (5+ hours), the families I sit for have paid $20/hour.

We pay $12-$15 and hour to babysit our 5-year-old.  I don’t think we would pay more than $15.

We pay $12/hour to babysit our 2-year-old and she is normally asleep for 75-90% of the time the babysitter is there.
