Garrison Elementary's 2nd Annual Auction: Taste of the Neighborhood

Support a great neighborhood school and get some great prizes at the same time.

We are doing something entirely different for our auction this year! Our theme is “A Taste of the Neighborhood,” and our auction items will highlight all of the great restaurants and food-related businesses DC has to offer with an emphasis on the businesses within our neighborhood: U Street, Logan Circle, and Shaw! Get ready to bid on some great auction items. And a special thanks to our sponsoring businesses!

Also new this year is our drawing! Donate to Garrison and you will automatically be entered into our drawing. You may win 4 Hopper Passes to Walt Disney World or 5-days of bike camp with Capital Cycle Camp! Results will be announced at our After-auction Event.

By participating in our auction, you are helping a great neighborhood school. Our fundraisers help to pay for field trips, cultural events, and other out-of-school activities like our Saturday Interactive Art Workshops. And because this auction is completely on-line, you can be charitable from the comfort of your own home.

Let’s start bidding!

Bidding opens at 8:00AM on Friday, April 1, 2016 and ends 8:00PM on Monday April 10, 2016.

Our After-auction Event is on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 (5:30-7:30PM) at Gallagher & Graham Fine Spirits (1939 12th Street NW).

Garrison Elementary's On-line Auction Opens 8:00AM May 1st

Please support Garrison Elementary by participating in our on-line auction. Bidding opens promptly at 8:00AM on May 1st and closes at 8:00PM on May 8th. The first 5 people to place a bid will receive five 24-hour membership passes for Capital Bikeshare valued at $35!

Top 5 Reasons to Bid & Donate:

1. All proceeds go directly to the students: Money raised will help fund enhanced programming and school trips like the one we have planned for Port Discovery Children’s Museum in Baltimore.

2. Your support helps local businesses: We have been overwhelmed by the donations provided by our generous local sponsors. Let’s return the love and go to their establishments.

3. A strong neighborhood school makes a strong community: Neighborhood schools are the fabric of our community. Strengthen our neighborhood schools with enhanced programming, events, and extra-curricular activities, and a healthy, vibrant local community will surely follow.

4. Give yourself a treat: We have some really nice auction items. Why not splurge on yourself or someone you love and help Garrison at the same time?

5. Just because it feels good: Altruistic giving makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside!

Room under $800 for June or July?

I’m haunting Craigslist but thought I’d post here too just in case. I’m looking for a room in a group house (or at least a friendly roommate or two) anytime between June 1 and July 1. $800/month preferred budget, but could higher depending on how much utilities run.

I’m a respectful, friendly, 25 year old woman who will be starting grad school this fall. Hoping to move before then to beat the student rush (although I’m not beating the intern rush, clearly). Looking for something long term as I’ll be in DC at least two years. Would prefer to be within 30 minutes biking distance to Georgetown (or on Capitol Hill so I can grab the bus at the law school) and walking distance from a metro or lots of reliable bus lines. Desperately trying to avoid Virginia if possible.

If you have any leads or are looking I’d appreciate any replies! Thanks!

Close to One Metro Line vs. Kinda Close to Two?

Popville, it’s time to play a game of “Would You Rather!”

Would you rather live really close (say within 3 blocks) of a single metro station, or kinda close to two different lines — say about a 12 minute walk to one and a 15 minute walk to the other? I currently live over in South Bloomingdale and therefore use the NoMa and Shaw stops, but sometimes that 12 minute walk can be fairly daunting in harsh weather. I would love to hear what y’all think!

Car Break-in on 11th and U

Hey Folks –

Just wondering if anyone has noticed increased car break-ins in the area? I have some video footage from the cameras that were on the house my car was parked in front of, and I’m wondering if it might be helpful. Around 2am on 11/14 my window was smashed and my computer was stolen (I know, I know, it shouldn’t have been in there, but I will say, it was NOT visible.. on the floor under a pile of gradebooks. Lucky thief). Any leads would be appreciated.

Agent Recommendations – Multi-Unit Properties

I’m looking to buy my first place and wanted to see if anyone had good recommendations for agents. Specifically, I’m looking for an agent that knows DC very well – especially the neighborhoods of Shaw, Truxton Circle, and H St/Trindad – as I’m looking primarily in zip codes 20001 and 20002.

I’m targeting multi-unit properties (anywhere from 2-4 units) and am looking for a value buy. I’d like to purchase something that is in livable shape, but it does not need to be pretty or anywhere near turnkey condition. The plan would be to live in one of the units and rent out the others to reduce mortgage costs and expenses, and perform much of the maintenance and upgrading of the units myself.

Anyone have recommendations on agents that have experience with those types of properties? Or have general advice on this approach? If anyone reading has done a similar process on their own, I’d be very interested in connecting to hear more about your experience.

Thanks in advance!
