Help with Tenant law? Is this legal?

Hi guys!

My roommate and I have shared an English Basement in Petworth for over a year now. However, our apartment recently flooded due to a drainage problem. It cost almost $3000 to clean and repair and now our landlords are trying to charge us the costs of the damage.

They are claiming that it stemmed from flushing tampons (which I seriously doubt for many reasons). And citing the abnormal usage part of our lease to justify this charge.

What do you think? Is the law on our side on this one? What steps can we take to protect ourselves?

Advice for Plaintiffs in DC Water Hearing?

Hi everyone,

My roommates and I are disputing a bill with DC Water and headed to a hearing with them this month. Our usage has consistently been beneath 10-15 CCFs for more than a year and then one month randomly spiked at 99 CCFs(!). We figured this must have been an error by DC Water’s metering system or something and are prepared to explain that there’s no way we used nearly 75,000 gallons of water in a month.

Does anyone have any suggestions for arguments that work best with DC Water? We’re not lawyers and don’t have one and want to make sure we make our case as clearly and effectively as possible.

Thanks!

Divorce

Hi all: Has anyone been through a divorce in DC or have a knowledge of the process? City websites have not been useful thus far. It would likely be a No Fault divorce, if I understand the terms correctly. We’ve been married ~2yrs, both live in DC, have no children or joint financial accounts. Only major joint expense is home we purchased in 2009.

As we’re on fairly good terms, I’d like to keep the process as fast and cheap as possible, hence considering mediation and/or No Fault, but I’ve also been advised to first consult w/an expert, and one that has my interests in mind to someone that has my interests in mind. (Plus, its just easier to talk w/a real person sometimes.) Also may want to hire someone to do the paperwork.

So: anyone done this before? Any recs on info resources, lawyers, etc? Tips, things to watch out for? Any help much appreciated. I feel overwhelmed.
