we recently replaced the main sewer line under our basement leading to the city connection. we were getting back-ups due to improper grading of the 100-year old cast iron line that wasn’t replaced during our renovation. it unfortunately seems to be a pretty common thing to fail in 100 year old infrastructure.
in many homes in DC, the city’s responsibility starts just outside the front porch, not at the curb, so make sure you double-check with the city what they are responsible for. it varies between DC-MD-VA and plumbers don’t always know each jurisdiction’s rules. i highly recommend getting multiple offers. we ended up having a large section, over 20 feet, replaced for about $8K including demolition and full replacement of the concrete pad and floor, but got estimtes that ranged up to $20K… no consistency in pricing from the plumbers at all. we ultimately used the guys at Jiffy plumbing and were happy with their work.
