Hello…not sure if you are still looking for responses. 🙂
Your leasing office is correct because there is one lease, and in which, lists two (2) tenants: you and your roommate. Though, you are on a month-to-month lease because the tenancy has contractually ended, the lease has not ended. As a co-tenant, you are still bound to a month-to-month lease with your co-tenant. Not by yourself. Your lease does not break into separate parts once the tenancy has ended. There are some instances where a lease lists all co-tenants individually responsible for rent. But, your’s is not the case. To end this month-to-month contract, all signing parties must end it collectively. If one decides to keep while the other decides to leave, then the leaving party must either find a replacement transferring all rights/duties to the new co-tenant or the staying party can agree to be fully responsible for the entire rent. If you take the latter route, be mindful that you are still jointly and severally liable for anything that happens because you are still on the lease. Hope this helps. Good luck.
