Well, Ben’s came after the Black Broadway period. But you are correct, it is one of few businesses to have survived the riots in the 60s and the economic downturn since. Many long time residents struggle with how new establishments are promoting themselves. To some, it feels like outsiders cashing in on a legacy they did not earn. To others, they are happy to see that as the area continues to develop, that there is a respect for the area’s historic significance.
Personally I find most of the places that play up the history are really fargin cheesy; the kind of place people go that need “to be seen.” But all those dollars are still helping build the neighborhood. And I’d rather have all the losers pack into Brixton and Marvin and all those places and leave the decent bars alone.
