You shouldn’t ever have to charge your freon yearly unless you have a decent sized leak. By the books, newer systems less than 10 years old) shouldn’t ever need to be recharged and even older systems should go atleast 7-8 years without needing a top up. Oh, and even if you did get a maintenance contract, they all exclude the cost of the refrigerant so if you are signing up for one specifically for that, you are really wasting your time and money.
Whomever told you that either doesn’t know what they are talking about or was trying to tell you something.
