The simple matter of the fact is, if you are needing to charge your system every year, you have a problem. Fix the leak, thats your problem.
As far as maintenance contracts go, they come, clean your airfilter (which anyone could do in 3.5 minutes) and run a flashlight over your coil to make sure it isn’t dirty (again, a 30 second enterprise) and check the charge on your system ( which does need speacilized equipment but again, shouldn’t EVER be low). For this twice a year service you pay anywhere from 220 to 350 dollars.
Then if they find anything wrong (repairs, low refrigerant charge) they charge you their standard freight for it. Your freon low, they will recharge it, but for their standard fee of $60-$70 bucks a pound.
If you have a brand new system, or just bought a new house, fine, get a “maintenance contract” for the first year. They will come twice and establish a baseline for the system. After that, it really is money down the drain. It is the car dealer equivalent of getting the “special undercoating”.
Again, if you have to recharge your system every year, something is wrong with it and the system needs to be fixed, not recharged.
