Not the most interesting topic, but I wanted to use the power of crowd sourcing to find some answers! Like most professionals, I have a few pairs of nice leather shoes. Nothing super nice, maybe $100-$150 per pair. They are all in desperate need of new soles and heels (not to mention a shine but I can do that myself).I went to a few cobblers or dry cleaners that offer that service, and the lowest I found for a half sole replacement and new rubber heel was $60. I need to repair five shoes! Considering all my shoes are at least 5 years old, should I just get a new pair for a little more money? I’d hate to toss my old shoes though since they are all still in great condition. Anyone out there have an affordable cobbler? Even $40 a pair would be a major improvement since I have to repair five pairs. Thanks
I need a nice suit for a big event in a few months. I’m a big dude so I have trouble buying off the rack, so I was thinking made-to-measure or custom. Budget probably tops out around $2,500 though obviously if I can get away with spending less, it would be great. The last Popville thread on this was 4+ years ago, so I’m hoping for some updated advice.
Any experience with Paul Stuart (MTM), Enzo Custom, or Geoffrey Lewis (custom), which are the three I’m considering at the moment? And any other options I should look at? (E.g., Suitsupply? I have a number of suits from Suitsupply, any experience with their MTM?)
I’m a little wary of what I’ll call the e-tailors (Black Lapel, Indochino, maybe even including Alton Lane); is that concern misplaced?
I’d like to get one of those screen doors that you just hang up (Magic Mesh, Bug Off..we’ve all seen commercials for them). Does anyone have experience with any of these products? It would go in between the back door and the metal gate door so that once it warms up I can unlock the gate and leave the door open without letting bugs in. I also have two dogs and it would be nice for them to be able to come and go out of the backyard but they’re scared of most normal things so I don’t think they’d actually use it.
we are just moving to Petworth and trying to figure out the best grocery and household supply shopping tactic.
While shopping at the !yes market would be lovely, it’s simply too pricey. Are there any fresh organic produce stores around? How about local/artisan stores…
We look forward to input!
Hello all –
I have a friend who has a basement apartment in their house. They want to rent it out and declare the rental income, and would like to get a legal C of O. The work was done up to code, but they didn’t pull permits for replacement of bathroom fixtures (no rerouting of plumbing lines, but a new toilet and tub, for example, no new electrical). What is the procedure for this? Is there someone who can guide you through the process?
Also, does it need to be officially registered with the city to declare the income? And do the utilities need to be separately metered?
Looking for scrubs and army/camo pants for a party on Sunday. Haven’t yet been to a lot of thrift stores in the area – any ideas on which would be best? Would prefer Metro or bus accessible.
A Sept. 4 post indicated there would be free delivery for certain zipcodes while the “Stinky Safeway” was closed. Has anyone found the promotional code and/or successfully used the free delivery offer?
I know it’s a little cliche but I’m having an ugly Christmas sweater party in a few weeks. Only problem is I don’t own an ugly Christmas sweater.
I’d love to buy one of the awesome 65$+ tacky sweaters I’ve found online but that’s a little rich for something I’ll probably spill tequila on anyway.
So POP folks, I’d love to know where I should check out. Should be metro accessible, bonus points if it’s somewhere in the district that wouldn’t be an absurd bike ride from dupont .
This is not a joke. I need to buy a hand muff somewhere in DC TODAY. There was some serious procrastination in making this purchase which makes it impossible for me to order one online. This is not life or death but it is as close as it can be to that. There must be a purveyor of hand muffs somewhere in this city, and if there is, you all would be the people who would know. Help!
I’m new to D.C., My Building owner ( a huge company) promised a rooftop dog park in the building where I currently live. After I moved in, they opened the park for a few months and then slapped a no dogs allowed sign on the park entrance. They opened a new park 1/8 the size with a faulty fence (big gaps where your dog can fit through). What can I do to get some kind of remedy for this? Ilike the building , but moved for the great dog amenities, otherwise I would have just moved to a house. By the way– I was charged a pretty hefty amenities fee.
Anyone know of a drycleaner that can handle and/or specializes in delicates/silk? I’ve got a very expensive silk scarf with a stain and I’d like to take it to someone who knows what they are doing… suggestions?
I am looking for a place in DC to order a glass table top for a custom designed table. All suggestions welcome. Thanks!
I was in my house last night when I heard about 10 or so gunshots right outside of my house. I live on the 100 block, just up the street past North Capitol St. Does anyone know what happened? So many police responded, but I don’t know if the suspect was ever caught. I follow DC Police Dept on Twiter, but they did not put anything on there about it. For my own sanity and peace of mind, I would just like to know what happened.
