DC Water and contractor crews will work 24 hours per day until the repair is complete and it is likely that this activity will continue beyond tomorrow evening.

Current Street Closures

· 14th Street NW between Pennsylvania Avenue NW and New York Avenue NW and
· F Street NW between 13th and 15th Streets NW

Back in April we noted that Chevy Chase had upgraded their “Crosswalk Flags” to a “HAWK signal (High-Intensity Activated crossWalK)”. Cleveland Park got one too – from a DDOT:

District law requires motorists to legally stop and give the right of way to pedestrians within crosswalks. However, DDOT research has shown that on busy, high traffic roadways, only about one in four drivers are willing to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk. If appropriate warrants are met, a HAWK signal can be installed on those roadways that do not meet engineering standards for installing a conventional traffic signal.

From DC Water:

DC Water and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) crews remain on the scene of a hole that opened in the roadway at 14th and F Streets, NW and are working to determine the cause of underground concrete falling 15 feet onto a sewer line.

A DC Water sewer investigator yesterday determined that concrete from above had collapsed a large section of a 54-inch diameter brick combined sewer line. The concrete may have come from the road itself or from another utility casing.

There are a number of utilities and old trolley tracks above the collapsed sewer, making this a complex repair. This sewer is 15 feet below the road surface and was built in 1897. DC Water anticipates approximately 30 feet of the sewer will need to be excavated and repaired.

DC Water and contractor crews will work 24 hours per day until the repair is complete. DC Water will provide updates throughout the process.

DDOT will manage traffic control during the process and traffic advisories can be found at www.ddot.dc.gov on the Featured News Section. The intersection remains closed to vehicular traffic at this time.

Dear PoPville,

I’m a bit confused, and I’d love help on a issue related to DC parking. My boyfriend lives in Virginia, and drives to visit me on the weekends in Columbia Heights. My street is not zoned, so any cars are welcome to park there, however he has received tickets for failure to secure DC tags. He is not a DC resident, nor does he plan to move to DC, but he does visit each weekend, and therefore falls within the twice in 30 days rule. He’s successfully secured a ROSA for the last couple of years, but this year it appears he has been denied. He doesn’t fall under any of the reciprocity permit options, so we are really at a loss. I understand the spirit of this rule, but what other options do Virgina residents who frequently visit the city have?
