Back in Dec. we learned that Black Whiskey would be opening in former Mar de Plata space in Logan Circle. At that time they hoped to open around the April. Looks like they still have some more buildout to do but according to the liquor license application, the space will be pretty large:
“New Full Service Restaurant serving American cuisine with occasional DJ and Dancing. Number of inside seats is 140. Total occupancy load is 275. Summer Garden, number of seats is 20.“

113 Rhode Island Ave, NW
Back in April 2012 we learned that Showtime Lounge would be coming to 113 Rhode Island Ave, NW across the street from Boundary Stone. I hadn’t noticed much movement but when I was walking around this weekend I noticed the front door was open. I peeked inside and spoke with one of the owners who says they hope to open around the end of the month. Plans are still for:
“The establishment plans to operate as a coffeehouse during the daytime hours, serving coffee, pastries and house made dips and snacks. During the evening hours, offering a small selection of beer, wine, spirits and finger foods.”
Finishing touches were still ongoing but there is a nice little bar in the back, some sweet retro wallpaper in the front and a mural on a back/side wall. It looks like it’s gonna be another great addition to Bloomingdale. Stay tuned for an exact opening date when it’s announced.

Thanks to @sailpro99 for sending the photo of Piola’s new signage at 2208 14th St, NW. In Aug. 2011 we heard:
“International Italian food chain serving genuine Italian food with a seating capacity of approximately 70 people on the 1st floor and 20 people on the 2nd floor. The total occupancy load is 150. A roof-deck (summer garden) with 40 seats and no entertainment.”
You can see their Arlington menu here.

10th and H St, NE
Back in Sept. 2012 we noted the new signs for a future Ben’s Chili Bowl at the corner of 10th an H St, NE. I noticed the signs were no longer there and little progress had been accomplished so I wanted to check on their status. Owner Nizam Ali tells me that plans are moving forward and “Our goal is to open before the end of the year.”

The Post’s Tom Sietsema tweets:
“Finally! @Daikayadc opens V-Day, “just for ramen on the first floor” says Daisuke Utagawa, the owner with @chefkatsuya”
You can see what Daikaya looked like here back in May 2012.
Get ready for some “authentic ramen bowls amongst other Asian-influenced dishes.”
Daikaya’s facebook page says 5pm Feb. 14th:
“walk-ins only for ramen, no reservations – our izakaya upstairs will take reservations when it opens but that won’t be for a while”

We last checked on Tacos Impala over the summer. Finally have a brief update via their twitter feed:
“Opening in the Spring! Look out for more info!”
Details as they release them.

I’ve been getting a lot of emails asking if Piola Pizzeria is still coming to 2208 14th St, NW just south of Florida Ave. Looks like they’re still coming as some fresh signage has been posted in their front window:

Dear PoPville,
Do you by chance know what’s going on with not-yet-opened All Souls Tavern at 8th and T, NW?
Last I heard they were targeting a Halloween opening. I walked by today and it looks like there are a couple of white bench/table things in there, but overall, it still looks very decrepit, inside and out and certainly nowhere close to opening. An employee from a nearby business commented that there had been some activity there, but they hadn’t seen anything happening for a few weeks. What gives?
Lots of folks have been writing asking about the status of All Souls. I’m told, unfortunately, there was a delay getting structural engineer plans which was needed before permitting was issued. That seems to be back on track and the new goal is to now open in “early 2013″.

4th and H St, NW
We first heard about the Carving Room Kitchen back in Feb. 2012. Lots of folks have been asking about their progress – we’ve finally got a sign of life:

This is the spot that will serve “house cured and hand carved sandwiches”. It will be located next to Wiseguy NY Pizza at 4th and H Street, NW. Incidentally, looks like Wiseguy will also have Gimme! coffee:

A reader writes:
“Just walked by and the door was propped open so I thought I’d snap some photos and share. Any idea when it’s supposed to open? Can’t wait!”
Back in early June we noted their good sense of humor. One of the owners tells me that while they don’t have an exact opening date, if all goes well, they are hoping for a September opening. Updates as construction progresses.

I was amazed at all the progress made at 1737 Connecticut Ave, NW where the BoardRoom is coming to the former Anna Maria restaurant (which closed in June 2009.) In Oct. 2011 we learned it will become a:
“New Tavern. Vintage game room with jukebox. Occupancy load is 251, seating is 90.”
You can see what the building looked like in June 2011 here.
Walking by earlier in the week you can get a peek of the inside:

Dear PoPville,
Just saw this construction going on across the street from The Mayflower Hotel on my way to work this morning. There was a Bobcat out front and workers going in and out, but I couldn’t see inside. The fencing prevented me from getting close but the sign does indicate an unenclosed sidewalk cafe.
The last post PoP had was from almost a year ago. Is this still Mari Vanna or something else?
Back in Aug. 2011 we learned that Mari Vanna would be coming to 1141 Connecticut Ave, NW next to the Godiva Chocolate store. It took a while but as you noted proper construction has finally started. And it is indeed still slated to become a Mari Vanna.
“A fine dining restaurant serving traditional Russian cuisine with a seating capacity of 215 people inside and sidewalk café seating for 25 people outside. Total occupancy load is 250.”
You can see their full NYC menu here.

1635 North Capitol Street, NW
Dear PoPville,
Does anyone know the official plans for 1635 North Capitol Street? Progress has been slow on this building, but recently it has been picking up. It looks pretty good so far. I had a brief conversion with a contractor right after the storefront was installed. He said the place was going to be a wine bar.
Back in Aug. 2011 we looked at a Craigslist ad mentioning a wine bar coming to the retail space at 1635 North Capitol St, NW (former Borf building.) Has anyone else heard that a wine bar was still planning on coming to that space?

A reader asks:
“Any word on DGS Deli? Just had Mile End in NYC and it was delish.. gonna need a more local smoked meat fix!”
Back in Feb. 2012 DGS Delicatessen had applied for a liquor license at 1317 Connecticut Ave, NW in Dupont Circle:
“Traditional Jewish delicatessen serving house-cured meats, fish, bread, bagels, and bialys with a seating capacity of 90 and total occupancy load of 127. Applicant requests a summer garden with 12 seats.”
I checked in with one of the owners and he writes:
“We are still on schedule for summer opening.”
Though much construction still needs to be completed. I will update with more specific dates as construction progresses.

I know cycling has problems, but the crackdown on juicing has gone too far.
All I know is I am tired of seeing every renovation is just a gut job, then a unoriginal...
I love Bacio pizza in Bloomingdale! They don't offer delivery but great neighborhood...
311? I think I found the flower thief. Suspect is helmeted male, hopped up on apple...
I tried their kabob last weekend, it was pretty good and a lot of food for the price....
