18th and L St, NW
Yesterday we heard the news that a DSW would be coming into the old Borders space in Friendship Heights. Looks like the downtown Borders at 18th and L St, NW might have a new tenant as well. Bisnow shares some scuttlebutt:
“that Nordstrom Rack is negotiating a lease at 1800 L St, Borders’ former location”
Nordstrom Rack currently has a DC location in Friendship Heights at 5333 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.

Looks like Columbia Heights isn’t the only one getting a DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse.) Thanks to @ricedavidw for tweeting the photo to @PoPville. This DSW will be located in the former Borders bookstore in Friendship Heights at 5333 Wisconsin Ave, NW.
Thanks to a reader for sending the word that:
“4912 Thai located at Fessenden and Wisconsin reopened as Tanad Thai run by the son of the original owners.”
Tanad Thai is located at 4912 Wisconsin Ave, NW. In Jan. 2012 we noted that there was a lot of love for 4912 Thai which was closed after it’s retail license was suspended.
Washington Business Journal shares the goods:
The restaurant from Bryan Voltaggio at Chevy Chase Pavilion will be called Range and will open in late fall.
Range will occupy 14,000 square feet at the location. It will have an open kitchen and feature an extensive cocktail program with an emphasis on local ingredients. It will house a bakery and retail shop as well.
Bryan Voltaggio “is co-owner and executive chef of Volt Restaurant in Frederick, Maryland, which received a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant in 2009.” Chevy Chase Pavilion is located at 5335 Wisconsin Ave, NW.
A reader sends some interesting scuttlebutt for the recently close Pottery Barn in Chevy Chase Pavilion at 5345 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Construction has started on the space and the reader here’s an H & M will be taking over. Anyone else hear that rumor?

Thanks to all who wrote in about the progress at the Rosa Mexicano located at 5225 Wisconsin Ave, NW, opening up Sat. at 5pm.
A press release says:
“The 150-seat restaurant includes spacious indoor, outdoor, and private dining seating. Blending traditional and modern elements of Mexican craft and architecture, the warm and vibrant decor features Rosa Mexicano’s signature hues of pinks and purples. Multi-dimensional art work complements rich fabrics and textures, as well as a floor-to-ceiling display of tequila bottles. Directly over the bar and extending into the dining lounge area, the ceiling glows with pink haze lighting that is set against an electric blue tiled cascading water wall, inspired by those at sister Rosa Mexicano locations. The enclosed patio area features a wall of vertical colored glass bands, creating a focal point from the street and exhibiting arrival for the Rosa Mexicano experience that awaits.”
Here’s a peek in the window:
From a press release:
Jonathan Waxman has joined acclaimed Rosa Mexicano as Chef-in-Residence, where the accomplished chef will curate its 2012 Flavors of Mexico series, seasonal celebrations that highlight the diversity of Mexican cuisine today, as well as lend inspiration to new menu items and invigorate some traditional favorites. As chef and owner of Barbuto in New York City, author of cookbooks “A Great American Cook” and “Italian My Way,” and a former contestant on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, Waxman brings his expertise and inspired, market-fresh approach to the restaurant group with 12 locations nationwide.
Each season, Rosa Mexicano will offer a thematic menu created by Chef-in-Residence Waxman. The following previews Rosa Mexicano’s Flavors of Mexico 2012 series, available at its restaurants nationwide.
Winter: Eclectic Cuts (Feb-March)
Combat cold weather with hearty, lesser known cuts of slow-cooked meat such as Pork Cheek Casserole and Lamb Neck Enchiladas.
Spring: Mexican Passover (April)
Inspired by Mexico’s rich Jewish history dating back to the Spanish Inquisition, Waxman will celebrate the fusion of cultures and current culinary trends in Mexico City with dishes such as Matzo Chilaquiles, Red Snapper Gefilte Fish and Tecate Braised Brisket.
Summer: Foods of Baja (June)
With the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California on either side, this summer celebration of Baja will prominently feature seafood and refreshing coastal drinks to keep palates cool from coast to coast.
Fall: Day of the Dead (Oct-Nov)
Get in the spirit of All Saints Day and All Souls Day (November 1-2) with Waxman’s personal take on traditional dishes, which will combine ancient mole and chile-laced recipes with the season’s best produce.
