We will be hanging out all night with John and his guys, from New Columbia. We’ll be serving up a few cocktails which we will be crafting using the seasonal gin. We’re thinking of an Apricot Bee’s Knees and maybe a Horchata Ramos Fizz. Also, our cocktails will be incorporating flavors of rosemary and black pepper, as well as blueberry and thyme.

Donovan House and Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants are pleased to announce the opening of DNV, an urban rooftop retreat 14 floors above downtown D.C., after a $300,000 revamp. Opening in late May, this newly-updated poolside oasis was reimagined by local design firm, GrizForm, and features stunning views of the Nation’s Capital, framed by sleek dark wood, glass, and chrome. Intimate tables for two and four and inviting lounge seating, upholstered in a soothing shade of green surrounds the pool, creating the perfect setting to join friends and neighbors to sip and savor the new menu of craft cocktails from Zentan’s bar manager Josh Berner and Asian tapas from Executive Chef Jennifer Nguyen in a communal atmosphere. Officially, the name DNV stems from the abbreviation for the Donovan House Hotel and provides a little mystery with being named after former CIA operative Bill Donovan, but informally it also represents a “Damn Nice View.”

Newly appointed Chef Nguyen, from the ground floor restaurant, Zentan, has created a menu of Asian tapas, inspired by her food and cooking style at Zentan. Guests can expect refreshing, shareable plates like Rock Shrimp Tempura, paired with a Kochojun aioli and candied walnuts; Watermelon Salad featuring Maryland blue crab, shaved hearts of palm and pink peppercorns; and Shuimai Dumplings with a pork filling, served with chili ponzu dipping sauce. Nguyen will also feature a shrimp ceviche, with betel leaf, toasted coconut, cashews and grapefruit. In the opening weeks, the food offerings will be limited, but will eventually expand to include the full menu.

Berner’s cocktail menu centers around inventive seasonal refreshments, including his “Tea Lights” – cocktails incorporating freshly brewed teas. Served in glass jars, the Tea Lights include sophisticated combinations such as Basil Hayden bourbon, house-made lemon bitters, and black tea syrup; Beefeater gin infused with citrus-chamomile tea, mixed with Aperol and Blanco Vermouth; and strawberry-infused Tequila Real, combined with lemon juice and verbena-mint tea. Guests can also indulge in a popular British-inspired refresher, Pimm’s Cup, offered on tap. DNV’s bar menu also features a signature spiced rum punch and a specialty punch updated weekly, which will be inspired by fresh flavors of the season. Sangrias and classic cocktails will round out the menu.

Happy hour will be available daily from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with special pricing on punches, sangrias, cocktails on tap, frozen beverages and specialty cocktails. Special pricing during happy hour will only apply to single servings of drinks, many of which are also available in shareable options for groups of 4-6 and 8-12 people. For example, happy hour drinks will include Butternuts Pork Slap Ale and Jack’s Cider for $5, select sangria, cocktails on tap and frozen drinks for $6 and spiced rum for $7.

DNV is located at 1155 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20005. Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Florida Ave week continues with 645. Back in Oct. 2011 we learned a new tavern called Inception was coming to 645 Florida Ave, NW in the former “we buy gold”/pawnshop space. At that time the liquor license application said:

“New Tavern. Tavern/Pub style menu. Live entertainment including DJ and occasional live music and dancing. Occupancy load is 399. Summer Garden 100 seats and Sidewalk Café 35 seats.”

I had forgot about the plans until I was walking by last weekend and noticed the outside was looking nice. It also looks like a little bar has been set up on the right hand of the building (though it appears walled off from the left hand side.) So, I’m not sure how this could possible fit 399 unless it connects next door and upstairs?

Anyway, in addition to the outside getting fixed up, late last month they applied for their sidewalk cafe under the name Brilliant LLC. Stay tuned:

Back in Aug. 2012 Toledo Lounge had closed for renovations. In Feb. 2013 we learned the space would be renamed Libertine. I noticed a new awning went up on Saturday and was previously told that this was holding up there opening. Apparently there was a debate about the size of the awning or something like that. Anyway, should be opening very soon. Looking forward to seeing what the inside looks like.

Are you a history buff? Biking enthusiast? Regular old adventure seeker? Join me for a bike ride around the oldest federal monuments, the DC boundary stones.

I walked around the original DC border a few years ago with a friend, and I’d like to do it again – this time on two wheels instead of two feet.

Meet at the Capitol Heights metro at 9:30am – we’ll do the SE, SW, NW, and NE borders in that order. Feel free to join for 1, 2, 3, or all 4 sides. If you do it all, expect a solid day (~60 miles) of riding – it’s an urban ride, stopping for lights (and stopping to check out the stones!), so it’ll take longer than your normal weekend jaunt.

Here is the route. I highly recommend checking out the route in conjunction with this site.

This ride will be unsupported – I will provide directions (route + stone locations, places to stop for food & water, metro stops in case you need/want to stop riding), but you should be prepared with everything else you might need: ID & cash, pump & patch kit, etc. We will be riding on regular roads, so take necessary precautions.

Boundary Stone Public House and DC Brau Brewing Company have agreed to sponsor this excursion: the first 50 riders to show up on Sunday will get Boundary Stone commemorative bike ride tshirts, and there will be DC Brau Corruption IPA on tap for $4 at the post-party! Whether you ride one side or all four, join us at the bar from 5pm til ??

Uh oh, Washington Business Journal reports that Rumors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization:

“1900 M Restaurant Associates Inc., which holds a liquor license at 1900 M St. and operates under the trade name Rumors, owes between $50,000 and $100,000 to creditors”

But all is not lost for fans of Rumors, WBJ also reports this has happened before in 1997. Though if they do go out of business this is some prime real estate…
