Starting this month, DC-area athletes, design fans, and real estate aficionados alike can enjoy the latest issue of what the real estate bible The Real Deal describes as “McSweeney’s meets Dwell” — the company magazine from DC’s tech-driven brokerage Compass. Following the launch of the premiere issue last fall, the spring edition of Compass Quarterly is themed around The Active Life, blending curated lifestyle content, high-end homes, and personal glimpses at Compass’ agents and how they engage with their communities.

With the agency having recently added offices in Chevy Chase and Georgetown to their Capitol Hill and Dupont Circle presences, there’s much local interest in the issue, including the voices of agents Veronica Seva-Gonzalez and Jeff Chin and the creative contributions of DC photographer Emma McAlary (Washington Post, Refinery29). Interspersed are DC properties across a myriad of neighborhoods, price points, and aesthetics: stately Colonials, charming Cape Cods, and graceful Victorian townhouses.

February 27 is International Polar Bear Day! Polar Bear Air Conditioning & Heating is teaming up with Polar Bears International to encourage the local community to take the #ThermostatChallenge. Turn down your thermostat a degree or two and together we’ll make a big difference.

According to The Green Book, if every household in the U.S. adjusted their thermostat by one degree, it would save the amount of energy Iowa uses in one year. Other ways to significantly reduce CO2 emissions include using programmable thermostats and choosing high efficiency cooling and heating systems. Polar Bear Air Conditioning & Heating is a DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) participating contractor, who can help you choose the most efficient HVAC system that will be the best fit for your home.

Taking the #ThermostatChallenge? Like Polar Bear Air Conditioning & Heating on Facebook, and they will donate $5 to Polar Bears International for every “like” received in February. Don’t forget to Tweet #ThermostatChallenge to tell your friends and Polar Bears International that you are participating. Let’s make a difference together!

Regular readers of PoPville probably don’t need a primer on how great a neighborhood Petworth is. But in case you’re new here: It’s a diverse corner of the district with lots of neighborhood spirit. New restaurants and bars are opening left and right. President Lincoln used to spend his summers in a cottage nearby, while President Obama was just here the other day, celebrating Small Business Saturday by shopping with his daughters at Upshur Street Books.

If you’re ready to move to PoPville’s favorite hood, you’ll want to check out the condos at 817 Varnum Street NW. These newly constructed condos feature hardwood floors, recessed lighting and lots of natural light. The open kitchens boast quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, and breakfast bars, and each master bedroom includes a walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom with dual vanities and spacious glass shower enclosures.

Of the three units at 817 Varnum, Unit 2 is in contract, but Unit 1 and the penthouse are still available. Unit 1 is 1,720 square feet, with 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Given the quality of finishes, the square footage, and the premier location, this is a great value at the new offering price of $649,900. The stylish penthouse boasts 1,215 square feet, with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, and is listed at $599,900. You can see them for yourself at their open house, this Sunday, December 6, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Click through for more pictures, or check out their video here. To find out how you can live in these beautiful apartments in one of D.C.’s most exciting neighborhoods, contact The Alex Venditti Group online or contact Jill Patel 202-302-3797, Greg Schneider 202-480-7927, Alex Venditti 202-550-8872.

Brookland has occupied an interesting place in D.C. history. Later it acquired the nickname “Little Rome” because of the nearly 60 Catholic institutions that grew up around around the Catholic University of America. These days, Brookland is probably best known to District residents as the home of the Monroe Street Market, a mixed-use development that includes an “Arts Walk” of dozens of artists’ studios as well as restaurants, cafes, and a Barnes & Noble bookstore.

You can get a taste of the neighborhood this Saturday at Best of Brookland. Put together by Gallery Towns, a new community of townhomes by Bozzuto Homes at Monroe Street Market, Best of Brookland will treat visitors to food and drink from some of the area’s favorite hang outs, including Busboys and Poets, Halsa, Brookland’s Finest, and the Dewdrop Inn. Brookland Pint will welcome guests to a beer garden, with community sponsors including Barnes and Noble, CUA, Dance Place, and A Creative DC. Read More
