The PoP Peep Project: “Marching with My Peeps”

“I am submitting this on behalf of our Peeps diorama team – directed by my daughter Ella. Ella describes it here:

My name is Ella. I’m twelve. I’ve loved art projects since I was little, particularly complicated design & building projects. My dad (George), brother (Sam), aunt (Jeanne) and I for years have loved peeps diorama contests- Washington Post, St Paul Pioneer Press. Each year we look forward to seeing them online. We’ve tried making peeps dioramas at home for a couple of year just for fun—and this year I decided we should really do it!

This fall was the first election I really paid attention to–partly because I loved the idea of a woman president. In the spirit of women power, I decided to make our diorama “Marching with My Peeps” modeled on the Women’s March (my dad was at the march in DC and my aunt went to the one in NYC). My aunt came to visit for a weekend this winter, and the four of us spent the weekend building our diorama.

I wanted each peep to be unique—reflecting different races, ages and issues people cared about. We spray-painted the peeps 5 skin tones. I sewed mini-pussy hats, designed outfits and made wheelchairs. We created many many signs based on actual ones from the March. I loved the wordplay—Peep Your Laws off My Body, Fight like a Chick, Peeps Grab Back, We the Peeple… as well as using the peep image on signs like We Shall Overcomb or Peeple R Peeple or Dissent is Patriotic. We also included a CNN camera person, the stage with the three march organizers, the singer Milck and “I cant keep quiet” and tons of other details.

The weekend started making our diorama, people across the country protested Trump’s executive order about Muslims and immigrant, so we took a break from building and joined protesters at the airport (now one peep’s sign- #NoBanNoWall).”

All entries should be emailed to [email protected] with ‘The PoP Peep Project’ in the subject line. Please include a brief description about your entry and please include 2 photos, one closeup and one capturing the whole scene. Entries should be based on local topics of interest if possible and sent by the end of April. Depending on how many I receive, I’ll post all as I get them. I will then pick 5-10 finalists that you guys will vote on. I will take the winners out to dinner and drinks (unless the high school kids win, then just dinner.) I will also bury the winners (and 2nd and 3rd place) in PoPville t-shirts. Good luck!!
