Rant: All our federal staff is out of the office today, so I”m the most senior person here. And my boss, who is also out, didn’t tell me this would happen. I found out from our IM system. A little heads up would be nice. I hope there are no issues to deal with.
Rave: A king cake from my parents is arriving today!

  • Quotia Zelda

Rave: BIL is arriving for a visit today.
Rave: Youngest Zelda’s birthday presents have been purchased. It’s hard to figure out what to get him when his birthday comes so soon after Christmas.

  • Rant: I have somehow gotten on an undergraduate admissions email list. Sometimes I write them back saying that yes, I really am an overqualified candidate, how nice of you to notice, even though I know no one is reading is it. Will it ever end? It’s like whack-a-mole.
Rant: DOG had a scuffle with a neighbor’s dog, unprovoked, completely the other dog’s fault. I could report it, but the owner is apparently quite the local criminal and I don’t want to put myself, my neighbors, or my dog walker in danger of retaliation.
Rave: things in my personal life are going quite well
Rant: but I really need to focus more at work. The news and feeling of impending doom is distracting me.
Rave: the woman at the dry cleaners. She’s always very friendly and sweet, and this morning was complimenting the heck out of the lace pants I dropped off.

    • Yikes! Sorry to hear about DOG’s scuffle. There are some real scumbag dog owners around here, waaay more than I’ve ever come across living in NYC or Philly. wtf is up with that? Anyway, hope DOG is unscathed!

    • That One Guy

Was DOG harmed in the scuffle?

      • He has the smallest of cuts. I only found it because there was one small drop of dried blood stuck to his fur. I cleaned it and put on some topical antibiotic I had left over from a previous open cut DOG had. I’m keeping a close eye on it. DOG is up to date on his shots, I have serious doubts about the other dog though.

    • topscallop

I shared this news with my other half and he offered to 1) beat up the other dog and 2) send Otis a toy or a treat. He’s kidding about the first one but he misses DOG!

  • houseintherear

Rave: Pablo the Westie slept through the night. We are no longer in a fight.

  • binntp

Rave: That picture. Those dogs look so dignified! Pablo, you have a gift
Rant: My poor old kitty passed away yesterday. The hardest part now is getting used to all the rituals of my day that included her; my rooms feel so empty.
Rave: 3-day weekend, sunshine, and the consolation of good friends who know what it’s like to love a fur friend

  • Question: I am looking for a nice happy hour location for a group of about 10+ people, any recommendation? Areas I have in mind are Chinatown, Dupont, U st and Union Station. Thanks

    • skj84

Chinatown: City Tap House, Bar Louie, Fado, RFD, Bar Deco, Brick and Motor, Penn Commons, Penn Social. Iron Horse is good, but they don’t serve food.
Dupont: Mission, Circa, Madhatter, Public, Big Hunt, Dirty Martini. Mission will hold space for your group for free.
U Street: Provision 14, Brixton(weekdays, not weeknights), Exiles, Hawthorne, Lost Society, Local 16, Quarter +Glory.
Union Station: Union Pub maybe? 201 Bar, The Dubliner.

        • Out of the list above (which is a good list)
          .
I like Penn Commons bar a lot (that’s the one outside of VC right on 6th right? All these Penn names). They have lots of long high tables and a really good happy hour – have a pretty good beer menu too. I like City Tap House (they have a ‘group’ area you can reserve, not sure if it involves $, but also some long tables). Only been to Bar Deco a couple random times, but seemed a bit overpriced – not sure if I fell in happy hour though.

          • skj84

Too many Penn’s near each other! But yes, Penn Commons has the long high tops. I actually keep forgetting its there, so many options in Chinatown. I love Penn Social if you want to do interactive stuff, they have games and DJ. If OP wants to explore at bit I suggest Lost and Found. My favorite chill bar in DC, even at its busiest its never super crowded and has a great beer list. Like Iron Horse no food menu but you can bring food in.

    • binntp

I’ve always appreciated Vapiano’s system of everyone getting their own charge card when doing a larger group happy hour–it makes paying the tabs a lot easier. There’s one in Chinatown and south of Dupont.

    • I’d add Black Jack (14th Street) to the list of recommendations.

  • Rant: People complaining we haven’t had snow yet to justify purchasing an $800 Canada Goose jacket when they live in the Mid-Atlantic.
    .
Rave: Nice weather this weekend. Would be nice to see this be a trend this year – last year so many spring weekends were gross out. I guess it’s not quite spring yet though…

    • dcgator

Wow, are they seriously $800? Who knew.

    • That One Guy

Per guidance from the Brooklyn handbook to hipsters, you’re not a hipster if you don’t own a Canada Goose. It’s part of the winter uniform.

    • Prince Of Petworth

I was in Foggy Bottom last week and saw approximately 1000 Canada Goose jackets. This stuff goes in cycles – first it was North Face, then HH now it’s Canada Goose.

      • You forgot “First Down” lol that may be showing my age but growing up in this area, if you didn’t have a First Down coat then an Eddie Bauer one a couple years later, you weren’t hip. (I was only hip in my First Down coat. Never quite made it to the others and absolutely REFUSED to buy a North Face coat.)

        • Can we go back to the pullover Starter coats too??

          • Those coats were not warm! But I loved my Charlotte Hornets coat. I didn’t know a thing about sports and I didn’t grow up anywhere near NC, but the Hornets had the best team colors.

          • Of course we can!!! I had one of those too!! and @Pixie I had a Charlotte Hornets one as well and besides the fact that I’m a HUGE sports fan I didn’t become one until 1996. I got my coat before then because it was purple and teal, DUH! lol

          • That One Guy

Not going to lie, I overcompensate as an adult for not having the cool clothes growing up. Starter jackets were one of those things everyone else seemed to own.

      • dcgator

I’ve noticed an uptick in HH recently. Dunno what it even stands for.

        • I think it’s more economical – like a Columbia – but places like Macy’s carries it. I think it’s supposed to be a “sailing” clothing company, never heard of it (I also don’t sail…).

        • It stands for Helly Hansen.
          .
The first time I ever saw it was in Japan in 1997. I think I started seeing it in the U.S. maybe in the mid-2000s… can’t remember for sure, but it seems to have become steadily more common in the past 5 or so years.
          .
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helly_Hansen

    • Just buy the damn jacket. It’s cold as balls without the snow.

      • My $200 down coat keeps me pretty darn warm in our frigid 35 degree weather.

        • My $120 coat keeps me pretty warm too. My point is, if you want the jacket and can afford it, be a good hipster and buy it or quit complaining. (not you, the people complaining). Personally, I think $800 is WAY too much to spend on a damn coat. But I think complaining that you haven’t bought one because of lack of snow is even more ridiculous.

          • They’re complaining that it hasn’t snowed…because they did buy the coat. I.e. to justify spending $800 on a coat. It’s a personal choice to spend that money….but I don’t need to hear the complaining that it’s not cold enough!

          • My $40 coat keeps my super toasty, too!

        • My $25.00 Goodwill – LLBean full-length down coat has kept me snug for 6 years now!

  • Rave: Found a super easy nondairy chocolate cake recipe to make with mtpkiddo for mtpwife’s birthday. Awesome! Now I just need to find a good icing recipe.
Rave: So excited for mtpkiddo to see Disney on Ice tonight. Can’t wait to hear all about it.
Rant: It’s going to be a late night and she’s going to be so amped. Sleep may be a little tough.
Rant-ish: My mom is super psyched about the princess theme for the DC show. I think she hopes that mtpkiddo will get into princesses, which we’d rather not have pushed on her. (Though certainly if she develops that interest on her own, so be it)
Rave: Changes are, if she does get into princesses, they’ll be princess super-heroes or princesses with trains, etc, since I have a hard time envisioning her losing those interests anytime soon.
Rave: Looking forward to reconnecting with some friends at a birthday party tomorrow afternoon. It’s a PJ party for the kids, which should be adorable. I think we’ll put the kids into their matching skeleton pajamas 🙂
Rave: While my sleep wasn’t great, I went to bed super early and got 8.5 hours of mattress time.

  • skj84

Rave: I had a breakthrough in my workout today.
Rant: My office is open on Monday so no three day weekend.
Rave: My weekend is pretty open. I’m going to catch up on my movies. Manchester By the Sea is on deck for tomorrow.
Rant: it seems wasteful to spend whats projected to be beautiful weather indoors.

  • Rave: As I was leaving my house, I must have spooked a hawk sitting in my neighbor’s tree – I was so startled (and so was the hawk!) that I didn’t have a chance to take a picture, but I of course thought of the Hawks Around Town feature here and now that I know I have one practically in my own backyard, it will be my quest to capture it on film sometime!
Rant: Still have the remnants of this awful cold. I want a sinus transplant!
Rave: Managed to make it to yoga last night anyway, and I made my step goal yesterday. So take that, cold!

  • Rant: winter weight and my clothes are all too tight. Need more exercise.
Related Question: Recommendations for moderate day hikes within one hour drive of DC?

    • Love your screen name 🙂

    • The Great Falls Billy Goat trail is really fun, lots of rock climbing. But it can get busy on weekends. Sugarloaf Mt (MD), Sky Meadows (VA), and Harpers Ferry (WV) are all within an hour or so of DC.

      • Sugarloaf is my favorite from this list. A few different trails you can follow depending on preference for intensity, and it’s great because this time of year, you’re unlikely to encounter very many (if any) other hikers.

    • There are at least a dozen great hikes in Rock Creek Park – you can do 1/2 mile to 10 miles. Billy Goat trail is great – there are 3 sections – A (the most challenging – major rock scrambling and no dogs allowed.) then B and C – great river views.

      • Also Roosevelt Island offers a few miles of wide flat trails – good for running. Swamp trail is lovely, between the river and swamp, loads of birds. Personally, I don’t like Sugarloaf – a long drive, and you just hike up through trees then look out over suburban developments and farmland. Sky Meadows kind of the same – a nice walk if you’re in the area, but I would not go there as a destination. Harpers Ferry does have some good hikes.

  • Rant: I have a severe case of Resting Bitch Face (RIB). NO, I’m not angry, not upset, not sad…I’m just not smiling at the moment! Even during my wedding I looked miserable. Not fair!
Rave: Some parts of my job I detest. Some parts, like the memorial service we’re hosting for a deceased associate today, I really enjoy. Celebrating a life, giving people a space to grieve, working directly with people. THIS is what I should be doing.
Rave/Rant: Triple date with friends and their spouses at the Hamilton tonight! Should be fun, but neither husband nor I are really looking forward to it. We’ve been growing away from these friends, but maybe this happens once people start getting married? Two of us are married and the third is getting married in June. Either way, hubby and I are excited to be out to dinner together.
Rave: Used leftover wedding money to buy discounted tickets to the Newseum! I’ve been before but he hasn’t. Can’t wait!

Rant: I swear that Trump is screwing with my plans to get home at a reasonable hour. I left work early, for a change, and caught the direct bus going home, only to end up in a motorcade road closure for half an hour. This happened the last time I left the office early too. Also, reading about the potential tax payer cost of Trump’s security and travel is ugh because he has no skin in the game (taxes) so shouldn’t benefit from everyone else ponying up.

  • I met a nice cat this morning. Little grey one, with a tipped ear. Super friendly– he was soliciting petting from everyone who walked by on 14th street. I checked his tag, and it said “I am an indoor-outdoor cat” on one side, and then a street address on the other side. Seems like a good compromise when you have a cat who absolutely WILL NOT tolerate being kept indoors.
    .
Seeings lots of geese flying north. Isn’t it a little early? Are they confused by the mild weather, or is it this early every year and I just forget?

  • Rant: Trump. Police State anyone? I hear their all the rage these days. I just love the idea of National Guard troops rounding people up in the streets. It’s so, retro, so 1930s Germany.
Rave: The weather for this weekend! Y’all can tale your dreams of snow and Canada Goose jackets elsewhere. I will be enjoying the sun and warmth!

Rant: working to finalize a report in which the two authors disagree in comments throughout about what happened/what to say. I wasn’t at the workshop the report is about, I just manage the activity, so I’m not sure who’s right.
Rave: three day weekend ahead! Like last weekend it’ll to be a mix of friend time and fixing up the new place – we have to finish painting before we can finish unpacking. But this time there’s a third day to get it done!
Rant: missed Wine and Bitch night to recover from a minor outpatient exploratory procedure that didn’t find anything useful to treat symptoms (acid reflux, nothing serious). Still a little sore from the IV.
Rant: next week I have multiple calls scheduled with partners in the field that are EARLY for me.

  • Rant: Bills – got to get my expenses DOWN starting with cutting cable. Fr those who have done this, what ISP do you use and how much are you paying? Thanks…

    • this was a couple of years ago, so info might be out of date. but when I didn’t have cable I used RCN and paid $40/month, and with that I had hulu plus and Netflix subscriptions. So like $60/mo total.

    • houseintherear

I have the Comcast plan that is $64 a month and the speed is perfect- have Nestcam and at least two devices going all the time and no delays. I think it’s called the Performance plan..?

    • Anonynon

anyone use sling box? is that a viable TV replacement to watch sports and occasional shows?

  • Where do people buy outdoor furnitures? I am in the market for a wicker outdoor sectional. Initially posted as a comment by mistake.

  • Rave: It’s my birthday!
Rant: Had a little hissy fit yesterday complaining about a lack of friends in NYC – I have my two closest friends here but no friend group. And very little time in the city to devote to socializing since I’m in DC and NYC every week + crazy international work travel…
Rave: Have a great weekend planned, my husband, family, and friends have me feeling well-loved, hope to go for a hike in the gorgeous weather.
Rave: Working from home with good music and sunshine.

  • Rave: Gorgeous weekend. Perfect for porch sitting.
Rant: Weeds in my garden. May just have to plow it all under.
Revel: 3 day weekend. Woot woot!!
