The stuff legends are made out of – February 7th, 2009

It is no secret that I love this place. They’ve been through a lot over the years and come out the other side smiling, well, they’ve come out the other side as solid as ever. Congrats to the whole team who are really way too modest – to maintain this level of great for so many years is not an easy task. The Street changes, Solly’s of course changes with it but at the end of the day remains true its soul – a no bullshit, good bar.

From a press release:

“On Sunday, October 9th Solly’s Tavern will celebrate 10 years on U Street with an anniversary party starting at 8:30 pm at 1942 11th St. NW that will feature the DJ-stylings of “Tony T” (Tony Tomelden of The Pug fame).

The tavern, that was once described by the Washington Post as “A cozy neighborhood dive with cheap PBR and friendly bartenders” is celebrating its 10th anniversary by hosting a party that will raise money of local youth non-profits. Proceeds from Solly’s commemorative anniversary t-shirts, silent auctioned items and all bar sales will go to support two local youth charities; Washington Jesuit Academy and Hoops Sagrado.

Washington Jesuit Academy, is a ground-breaking, independent middle school in Brookland that is tuition-free and serves DC’s low-income and under-served boys.  The Washington Jesuit Academy leverages an 11-hour school day, 11-month academic year, highly qualified teachers, and a comprehensive approach to poverty in order to prepare these young men to thrive in high school, college, and beyond.

Hoops Sagrado is a D.C.based youth leadership and development nonprofit that creates connections between at-risk youth from the D.C. area with their Mayan indigenous peers in the highlands of Guatemala using mutual passion for basketball as a common ground.
“For 10 years the U Street community has supported Solly’s, and we felt this was a fun way to say ‘Thank You’ and give a little something back,” said Solly’s Tavern owner and namesake John Solomon. “We’ve chosen two local charities that have a direct impact on the quality of life of youth in our community.”

“From day one Solly’s created a neighborhood spot where everyone feels welcome,” said Bryan Weaver founder of Hoops Sagrado. “Solly’s has supported this community with sponsoring youth sports teams and more importantly hiring local people to work at the tavern, It’s no surprise to me that they would celebrate their 10th anniversary by raising funds for local youth… it’s a put your money where your mouth is kind of place.”

In that tradition donations to the organizations will be based on the bar sales between 8:30pm to close on Sunday October 9, 2016.”
