“Street Opera Singer Arrested in Old Town, Alexandria for a noise violation.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m trying to generate support for Krista Clouse, the street opera singer arrested in Old Town, Alexandria– for a noise violation. She often performs near The White House to the delight of crowds and secret service agents.”

The change.org petition reads:

“Krista Clouse, a talented soprano and street performer, was arrested and jailed by the City of Alexandria (Va) police for violating a city noise ordinance. For many years, Krista has earned a living performing in Old Town, Alexandria and near The White House in Washington, DC.

Busking (singing) is LEGAL on the streets of Alexandria without a permit. However, if you use a music amplification device, you need a permit. Ms. Clouse has said that the tips she earns while singing on the street help support her family.

Ms Clouse does not amplify her voice but, as part of her performance, needs orchestral accompaniment. As you can see in the video above, her voice is much louder than the music being played in the speaker.

I have often seen her perform near The White House to the delight of crowds and secret service agents.

City of Alexandria, Virginia: Let Krista Sing!”
