  • Schools are open?

  • First day of school?

  • There’s usually a police presence on Mount Pleasant Street, NW. This is scary knowing that someone can harm in during the day time on the streets. With the D.C. public schools opening, these type of incidents might increase. It would be nice to go without crime for one day in this city or country. I guess, I’m living in a world of fantasy.

    • why would incidences increase because school is open?

      • I assume Wayne’s point is that there are large numbers of teenagers in a concentrated area at the time school gets out, whereas in the summer it would be more diffused over time and place.

        • Also — IIRC, there’s evidence (or at least a theory) that people are willing in a group to do (bad) things that they might be more hesitant to do on their own. Plus there’s the factor of people egging on other people, trying to impress other people, etc.

      • People are always looking for some seasonal or other pattern to the explain often very small changes in crime over the course of the year.

      • Ally

        I assume you’re being sarcastic?

  • Odds of this group being related to that other assault/robbery by a gang of juveniles are likely fairly high.

    • Don’t think so. That other incident (on Newton St) was by a group of juveniles from SE DC in the area on a field trip. (Yes, really!) This behavior sounds similar, and this collective-violence activity by juveniles is very troubling. Watch out for bands of teens, who can evidently incite each other to do dreadful things.

  • Pretty dim to mug someone in your school uniform.

    • No one said criminal behavior was “rational”. Actually, there being many people in uniform may make it even less likely they can be identified.

      • Actually, it’s pretty easy to identify them if the school is willing to comply. If you can identify one kid, it’s usually not hard to figure out who was with him/her. Or if you have limited descriptions of several, you can usually identify the group. These kids are not that bright.
        .
Also, that corner is rarely, if ever, empty. There are always people (i.e. witnesses) waiting for the light, walking around, sitting in the window at Ercilia’s or Flying Fish, the bus stop, etc. Plus you’re 100 yards away from the likely source: CHEC.

  • Consequences for violent thieves? I don’t care that they’re kids. They know what they are doing.

    • I’d suggest that you weigh in with the Attorney General and your Council member if you want to see any change in how juveniles committing unarmed robberies are addressed. As it is, the consequences, if any, are light.

  • I’m going out on a limb here to suggest this was probably the result of some real or perceived slight, which led to a cocky teenager thinking she had to get aggressive in front of her friends.

  • The prevailing theory is that this type of teen crime has been associated with rise in popularity of selfie photos. Kids have been desensitized to it because they are accustomed to ‘mugging for the camera'(phone)

  • This could happen to anyone. The attack didn’t occur where the photo was taken (victim moved there screaming for help). The attack happened on Hobart St. NW. Which is a very quite and kid-friendly street.

The victim is your neighbor. She’s a mom of two children and hard working woman who lives and loves Mt Pleasant. She was coming back from work to check on some home repairs being made by a contractor. — It was earlier than her usual schedule — so we can see there was not following or premeditated monitoring from the criminals.

As someone said, criminals should be easy to identify. Not only by visiting the schools and interviewing teachers, the victim’s cellphone reported signal and location on SE DC a few times right after the attack. But the Police said that they don’t and won’t track those traces (??!). Even when it was located on the map!

Let’s just hope that somehow, somewhere those guys will be catch. And nobody gets hurt again. She was attacked by two guys and hit on the face. Horrible.

Let’s hope kids, women and everyone on Mt Pleasant is safe.
