  • Rave: Fun Saturday.
Rant: All the changes I want to see are in other people’s hands. :/
Revel: No way but forward, right?

  • Rant: After sleeping so well on Friday and Saturday nights, Baby Artie was up so many times last night. I don’t know if it is teething or just very sophisticated psychological torture. Oy.
Rave: Baby Artie is just so sweet and smily and charming. He has the entire extended family wrapped around his chubby, drooly little fingers.
Rave: Partner is home today after two weeks of work travel.
Rant: The criticism of Gabby Douglas. What is wrong with people? The racial component of the online criticism makes the whole thing even worse.

    • skj84

I feel like Gabby can’t catch a break. Can we let the girl live? So she wasn’t smiling during her teammates all around? So what? Her hair isn’t up to some peoples petty standards? Also so what. And this damn hand over heart non-treversy. Its not the Pledge of Allegiance people. People need to lay off of her.

      • Absolutely agree on all of this. Ugh. I just feel for the girl.

        • Noooo idea what you people are talking about. Some Olympics thing?

          • skj84

A quick google of the name Gabby Douglas would show her as in Olympic gymnast competing for what will probably be the final time in Brazil. She has faced scrutiny over her hair, and the fact that she didn’t place her hand over her heart during the National Anthem while receiving gold with her team last week.

    • Ugh on baby Artie! Silly boy. Mtpbaby was a wreck last night but fortunately slept just fine after a dose of ibuprofen. I can’t tell if he’s teething or perhaps has another ear infection. I guess we’ll see how his day goes today….

      • I hope it is teething and not an ear infection. Poor guy.

        • Me too! But I’m not sure I see or feel anything. Oy. Some things are much easier when they can tell you what’s wrong. Then again, other things are harder by then 😉

    • “racial component of the online criticism”
      .
Irony notwithstanding, I’ve long ago stopped reading the comments section of most online media. I feel dumber every single time I try to make rational sense out of folks’ extreme myopia.

    • Ashy Oldlady

That is the most adorable name for a baby, by the way. Did you name him after Artie Lange? I’m picturing a fat little baby with a stubbly beard, chain smoking cigarettes and trying to avoid a relapse.

      • Andie302

I THINK she’s just calling him Artie after her handle, but I also love it! I had a friend from our shared hometown with that name that I associate with so many great childhood memories.

        • This. It is just his online persona so he has some anonymity.

Now that you have put this imagine in my head, I kinda want to dress Baby Artie in a stubbly beard for Halloween. He already has the fat part down.

I did have Arlo, Arend, Arthur, and Ari on the baby name short list, but Mr. Artemis struck them down. Can you tell that I like names that begin with Ar? 🙂

  • Rant: Had plans to eat at Tail Up Goat on Saturday, but my wife came down with a truly vicious case of poison ivy. It’s brutal, she’s miserable, and there’s nothing I can do except make sure she takes it easy. Any secret remedies welcome (but she has already considered, and rejected, the “pee on it” suggestion).
Rant: Michel Richard’s passing. An immense talent – his lobster “begula” pasta was one of my favorite dishes anywhere. Plus, Central paved the way for the newer style of more casual establishments with excellent food. I am old enough to remember when Citronelle was, for years, the tip-top of the top tier in restaurants in DC. While I generally like the new, more casual style of excellent restaurants, there is something to be said for fine dining on special occasions.
Rave: The Olympics, and Maryland’s continued dominance of the gold medal platform.
Rant: Hope Solo. You got beat. It happens. Act like a grownup. If my 9 yo acted like that after a loss, there’d be hell to pay. In the words of Motley Crue, Girl, don’t go away mad, girl just go away. Now.

    • Prince Of Petworth

Have her go to the doctor and get a cortizone shot!!

      • She went Saturday morning and got prednisone (sp?), a topical steroid, and a prescription itch medication. I will suggest a cortisone shot too – thanks!

        • Oh man, and the prednisone didn’t help? That’s strong stuff! I had a serious itchy allergic reaction last summer and that pretty much stopped the itch!

          • It seems like it’s gotten a *little* better, but it’s been 48 hours, and the itch certainly hasn’t abated. Not that we needed any reaffirmation, but this is yet more evidence that women are tougher than men. I’d be losing my mind.

        • cool compresses soaked in vinegar (gives relief for sunburns too). There’s also this stuff called Domeboro that is great to pour into the tub to soak in or to make compresses out of. Hope she feels better soon – poison ivy can be brutal.

          • Domeboro – this stuff is a miracle anti-itch treatment. Middle Anonachild had it as a treatment at one point. Just tell her not to get her hair in it. It is very similar to vinegar in pH level.

    • Quotia Zelda

Mr. Zelda had a memorable anniversary dinner at Citronelle several years ago. God, that asparagus vichyssoise. I love Central, too – it’s where we had Eldest Zelda’s hs graduation lunch. I loved Michel Richard’s creativity and sense of whimsy with food.

    • Cool wash cloths, not moving anywhere, and lots of patience.
I’m sorry for your wife, I’ve been there and it’s awful.

    • Hope Solo is getting (relatively) old now, right? I can’t wait until I don’t hear her name anymore. She’s a cancer on US soccer. Though, something tells me she’ll boil up again long-after her retirement in some celebrity rehab offshoot.

  • Quotia Zelda

    Rant: Louisiana flooding.
Rave: Family and friends are all fine.
Rave: New phone arriving today! My dying phone is several years old, so the new one should feel like a huge leap forward.
Rant: Ordered the wrong color by mistake, so now I have to go to the store to exchange it when it arrives.
Rant: MVA is making it even harder than usual to schedule Middle Zelda’s driving test.

  • RANT: This heat! I’m not a summer girl, I love big sweatshirts and curling up under a blanket.
RANT/RAVE: The office is dead silent this morning, usually would be a welcome change to get some work done…. but after 5 big deadlines on Friday, I don’t have much to do!
    RANT: Feeling a little lonley.

  • Rave: Closing on a condo this week.
Rave: Picked out paints & other interior things yesterday, feeling good about it!
Rant: Took a nap too late yesterday, tossed and turned all night. Definitely a Monday.

  • Pay attention to time for appointments. I showed up on time for an 8:30 MRI this morning (and it was a rough morning, barely made it there). Turns out my appointment is for 8:30PM! Who has doctor appointments at 8:30 pm?!! So from now on will be reading those times of day too!

  • skj84

Rave: back on with my guy. Probably not the best idea, but I want to try to make it work.

Rant: My best friend can’t catch a break this year. Her mother passed away in March and her father passed on Saturday. The worst part is she found out via social media. Friend had a very complicated relationship with her father, and is not on speaking terms with her brother, but its still a shame no one reached out to her. I feel awful that she has to go through all of this.
    *
Unofficial Popville Happy Hour is tonight at Roofers Union! I will be there around 5:15, 5:30, look for me in a purple ruffly dress. I’m going to shoot for second floor, I don’t think the Happy hour is available on the roof.

  • Rave: it’s DOG’s adoptaversary/birthday and it turns out he can still learn new things at 9 years old. After his week at doggy daycare he now sleeps fully on his side. It sounds trivial, but I have never seen him do it before and it’s going to help his elbow get some rest.
Rave: I leave for vacation Friday!
Rant: pre-vacation gear freakout. Temps are going to swing from the 30s to the 80s most days and now I feel like a trip to REI is in my future.
Rant: reviews and compensation this week. Ugh, I’m nervous.

    • Wow – where are you going that you’re expecting temp swings like that? Also, Happy Birthday/Adoptaversay, DOG!

      • Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.
I shouldn’t say everyday, but there are a number of days in the forecast that look like that. Some are not that not and a few are slated to start in the 40s. I have a packable puffer and plenty of other stuff, but I might go pick up a lightweight fleece too.

        • i camped in yellowstone just around this time last summer and it was freezing at night! and actually, i didn’t even take off that many layers during the day except when hiking. it will be a welcome change from dc, but i definitely suggest a puffer + fleece + hat + gloves… have an amazing time, i loved every minute.

    • It’s all about the layers. When I was in Utah in May the temps ranged from 25-95 degrees. Layering a fleece under a windbreaker plus warm base layers kept me warm without having to pack a big bulky jacket. And I have this super thin, super warm Columbia vest, I think it’s called Omni heat? Check it out at REI. That vest is magical.

So jealous of your trip! Have an amazing time.

  • dcgator

Rave: Sore body means I got some good exercise this past weekend (even in the absurd heat)!
Rant: Anyone who knows me knows that I can come up with some pretty trivial things, but overall—I can’t really complain…happy Monday, y’all!

  • Rave: lots of changes coming in the next month. New job, new condo. Gonna be chaotic but super excited!
Rave: Vacation tomorrow!!! Going with a group of people, a little nervous about the dynamic and travelling with people I’ve never traveled with before, but its vacay and hopefully everyone will be on their best behavior!
Rant: not any, at this very moment!

    • Andie302

This must mean your agent got his act together? Congrats!!!! I had clients go under contract over the weekend and it’s so nice to share that experience. They were a little tipsy when I told them so there was a lot of joyous yelling and “We love you”s

      • Haha I wouldn’t say he got his act together. I would say he is very lucky. I’ll be happy when escrow CLOSES!

  • Rave: Lovely weekend! Slept late on Saturday and then did yoga with like, a million kittens at the Washington Human Society / Washington Animal Rescue League! So fun and relaxing! Then spent Sunday having fun exploring a couple vineyards in Loudon County with Spite Cupcakes!
Rant: Back to the grind today. Did not sleep particularly well Saturday night or last night, wishing this was a long weekend but oh well.
Rave: HH at Roofer’s Union tonight – I got my dates mixed up and I can come on time because my 5 p.m. meeting isn’t until tomorrow…
Rant: Although that means that I’m doing that tomorrow night..boo.
Rant? Rave? Have a vet appointment for my slightly-older-than-middle-age-but-not-yet-elderly cat on Saturday, mostly for a regular check up but I’m a little nervous because she’s been a little lethargic and acting “off” for the past couple days….Maybe it’s just the heat. Nonetheless, always a bit nervous with her.
Question: Does anyone know if Uber will take you somewhere with a well-behaved cat in a carrier bag?

    • My cat and I have successfully Uber-ed several times. I usually request the Uber a little early in case the first one refuses, but I’ve never had an issue (or needed to call a back-up).

    • Andie302

We’ve taken Mocha without any carrier several times. I would request the uber and then call the driver to make sure he doesn’t mind. (I’ve also been using UberXL to move furniture purchase on CL and I’ve found nearly every driver to be super accommodating!)

    • Thanks guys, good call on getting a hold of the driver to make sure s/he doesn’t mind a well-behaved cat in a bag!

    • Shouldn’t be a problem. I have a friend who Ubers everywhere with a small dog in a bag. She said the driver has only refused once.

    • HaileUnlikely

I have taken my cat in a carrier in Uber several times. A couple of times I have called the driver in advance. One of those times the driver said no problem. The other time the driver spoke very little English and did not understand what I was asking him but did not object when I brought the cat with me into the car. A couple of other times I did not call in advance, but asked the driver if it was ok when I got in and he said it was not even necessary to ask. I’d still ask, though, in case a driver has severe allergies or something.

    • I’ve taken my cat to the vet in an Uber several times, never called ahead, and never had a problem. Granted, the first time I took him it was an emergency and I was obviously upset and crying so I think the driver felt bad for me. But the other times were fine as well. I have him in a carrier, which I then wrap in a big bath towel so he’s completely covered (to try to keep him calm), so it doesn’t even look like I have a cat. But I always mention it as soon as I get into the car, just like HaileUnlikely.
I am so glad you liked kitten yoga! I was one of the volunteers there and it was fantastic to see so many people come out to support WHS/WARL.

  • Rant: Woke up sore.
Rave: Because I had too much fun at the building museum, pulling around 5 kids on an “iceberg”.
Rave: Pulled out the kiddie pool yesterday afternoon–it was the perfect Sunday late-afternoon activity. Kids could play in the water, while mtpwife & I took turns getting things done.
Rant: Mtpbaby was SUPER cranky last night. Not sure if it’s teeth or ears or what. That poor kid can’t catch a break!
Rave: Love watching mtpkiddo & mtpbaby together–they clearly just adore each other and it is so darn sweet.

  • Rant: Littlest Anonachild was a mess at camp drop off today. This week’s camp is in the middle of the woods, and this city boy was having none of it. He has declared that he wants to move back to DC where there are no woods. How is it that I have some how raised a child who has no fear of straight up crazy people and the 70 bus route with all its regulars, yet he is afraid of the woods?!
Rave: The end of summer is in sight! I am so sick of this heat and humidity.

  • Pablo Raw

Rave: Quiet well balanced week with enough social life and me time
Rave: Saw the proof of my photobook and it’s looking great
    Rave: unofficial HH!

  • Rave: Banana kefir for second breakfast. I think I may have finally found an easy way to get some protein in.
Rant: Michel Richard’s passing. I can remember the first time I had the opportunity to eat at Central for a work dinner (I definitely couldn’t afford it for the first few years I lived in DC). It was pretty magical.
Rave: Date night tomorrow night with the Other Mrs. Rabbit. Tickets to see Anthropoid have already been secured.

  • Rave: Dancing Ponies!
Rant: Boss back from vacation. And boss likes to go through e-mails in consecutive order – oldest to newest. ARGH.
Rave: Seems I’ll have some semblance of consistency in schedule for the next 4 weeks or so. And that makes me feel more settled and less anxious.
Rant: Wish I could just read A Little Life all day. Such a beautiful book, so captivating and so difficult.
Rave: NYC Public library holding a discussion session on A Little Life next week – can’t wait to discuss it with others.

  • jim_ed

Rant: Some jerkass sideswiped the hell out of my parked car some time over the weekend and fled.
Rave: Car is definitely more aerodynamic now without a side mirror or door handle. Plus not being able to open the drivers side door means I can practice jumping in through the window like a bad ass.
Rant: Realizing you don’t have rental reimbursement like you thought you did.
Rave: At least they hit my POS commuter car and not our new car. It’s a small victory, but I’ll take it.

    • I spent a decent part of my elementary school years refusing to get in and out of a car any other way. The Dukes of Hazzard was a powerful influence on my life. My parents were tolerant enough, but refused to allow me to affix dynamite sticks to arrows, or to just washed out bridges in the Olds Delta 88. Good times.

      • jim_ed

Fun Fact – I volunteered for the campaign when Ben Jones, who played Cooter, ran for Congress in my district in high school. I’d be down if my entering/exiting the car was interspersed with snappy banter and banjo strummin freeze frames, but I’m not sure the confederate flag on the roof would be real popular in the neighborhood.

  • I Dont Get It

Rant: I just caught a strong whiff of Eau de IDGI. I need to remember that just because I work from home doesn’t mean I should totally give up on personal hygiene.
Rave: Visiting dog Molly was a lot of fun and we had Doggy Dance Party Saturday night (alcohol may have been involved with the humans). Her song was “All About That Bass” and although Lucy is totally out of it, Lucy did seem to perk up some when I played her song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
Rant: The cat was not amused by any of this.

    .

  • Rant-the greenline at petworth metro station. Epic cluster fuck, no info from the station. Waited for 20 min gave up and did uber pool. Uber pool driver said his “app broke” and we bascially did a tour of the city to do three drop offs.
Rave-new dog took me for a run this morning. Sort of. But a good start to the day before dealing with the metro debacle.

    • skj84

I may have to give up on pool. I took it 3 times this weekend, and all three times the drivers either picked up or dropped off two additional passengers. And the price of the ride stayed the same. Its not that I don’t mind riding with more than one other person, I think I should know going forward. And the driver should check first before picking another person up on the ride. Yes I know its a pool service, I’ve just never ridden with more than one other person, or the both people were going to the same place.

  • Rant: The more I think about NOT spending money, the more money I spend. The same with eating. How does this happen??
Rave: Wedding invites in the mail this weekend, wedding website updated, and photographer booked. Moving along!
Rant: Still that one co-worker who won’t talk to me/look at me. It’s getting old. And she doesn’t get a wedding invite.
Rave: Dinner tonight = roasted cauliflower!!! Best. Food. Ever.

    • Re: your last rave. I was very anti cauliflower until I had it roasted – revelation! It’s great and taste very different from other cooking methods.

  • Revel: Slowly but surely making my way to commit to Buddhism.

Rant: Having a really hard time not drinking… for me, that’s the hardest part about committing.

    Rant2: Mondays, amirite?

  • Rant: Fuse is short today. I was trying to do what I thought was a good thing and got pissed all over for doing so. I’m so furious that I am not going to support them and their endeavors anymore because of one person. It takes a lot for me to get to this point, and it’s unfortunate.

Rant: My crazy boss has known about a client change since the beginning of the month, and he just told me about it 5 minutes, when there is a COB deadline for billing which now involves a lot of extra work. Extra hoop jumping on top of the regular rushing around to meet this deadline because of his disorganization has now somehow become my problem.

Rant: The guy gave me hope. I had hope. Why would you say to someone that you want to have a relationship with them, are concerned you’d hurt them but were willing to take a shot, and when the other person says “okay, I’m scared too, let’s try…” they get weird and avoid and fall off the planet? Wouldn’t you get that out of your system first???

Rave: I have a job. I can pay my bills. I can eat. I have a place to live. I have good friends. Etc., etc., I’m trying really hard to be grateful.

    • Oof, your rants. Sorry you have to deal with so much. Glad that you are able to be grateful for the other good things in your life.

  • Rant: Migraine. No happy hour for me. Boooooo.
Rave: Training for my promotion starting today! Ah!
Unknown: Really want a day off to sleep and be bored during the week. But at the same time, would I feel guilty about missing a day of work?

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: so cold in my office my nose is running.
    Rave: unofficial HH tonight.

  • Rave: HUGE garden haul over the weekend including almost all the honeydew melons (no succession ripening with them), lots of tomatoes, lots and lots of cucumbers.
Rave: Made lime, ginger melon jam and sweet/sour/spicy melon pickles. And hot pepper pickles, and regular pickles.
Rave: Steam canner which makes canning in this heat more bearable.
Rave: Mouse melons (also called Mexican sour gherkins)! So cute, and delicious!

  • Rant: Not happy with the (non-PoPville) friend I paid to look after my cat while I was on vacation. There appeared to be 4-5 days’ worth of pee clumps in the litterbox, and some of them had been there for so long that they were REALLY hard to scrape off.
    .
The friend also possibly broke my garbage disposal and ignored the various directions I left for trash and recycling.
    .
Will not be asking this person to catsit for me again.

    • Ugh! I am so sorry. That is beyond annoying. You seem like you’re handling it better than I would….

    • oh no! I’m so sorry, textdoc! Hope kitty is none the worse for wear, and that you get to feeling settled back in soon!

    • Additional rant: Sudden unanticipated dental problems, severe pain, complications with the anesthesia, more pain, can’t eat. ( Because of numbness, can’t eat until 3 p.m., or possibly 5:30 p.m. given that some of the anesthesia seemed to “kick in” late.)

    • I also had a friend look after my cat and returned from vacation to fine the cat’s food and water bowls empty and several days worth of poop on the foyer floor. The cat box was empty, and so I think kitty was expressing his displeasure. I felt terrible for the poor guy.

    • I am going to have to seriously simmer down before I next talk to this person. And probably not even mention the cat stuff, because bringing it up now isn’t going to accomplish anything, and it’ll probably just upset the both of us.
      .
To be fair, I left the house in more disarray than I should’ve, and I think the friend was annoyed about that… but that’s no excuse for not scooping the litter properly.
      .
I also have a feeling from the paucity of cat-food cans in the recycling that this friend was not giving the cat her wet food every day.
      .
I hope the friend was better at providing company for the cat than at the other tasks.

      • hammers

I know I live a little farther away now, but you can still count on me to watch your furball if necessary to avoid that happening again. Also, I really recommend Sit-A-Pet, but for a long trip, it might be prohibitively expensive.

      • Why should it matter if you left the house in a state of disarray? Was your friend staying there while you were gone? Even then–seems like a weird thing to get upset about, especially if you’re getting paid.

        • Friend was indeed staying at my house. I asked Friend in part because Friend is currently unemployed and living with a parent in the ‘burbs, so I thought it would be an appealing prospect, esp. for pay.

          • I agreed to cat watch for someone who turned out to be a hoarder with bugs. I still went back and fed the cat….in a hazmat suit of sorts, but I did it. Even if your house was hoarder level, they still have to feed the cat & scoop the poop.

          • I am curious… what was your “hazmat suit of sorts”? Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

          • Long pants tucked into my shoes. Coat fully zipped and buttoned. Gloves. Hair bonnet.
            Then holding my breath.

  • HaileUnlikely

Rave: One of the best races I have ever seen followed by one of the best genuine displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen in the mens 400 meter run last night. The 2008 champ and 2012 champ, who have been carrying on a friendly rivalry with each other for the last several years, both ran over to the man who handed them their @sses and set a new world record and gave him big genuine enthusiastic hugs. You often see obligatory handshakes or pats on the back after races, but you could tell that Kirani James (Grenada, 2012 champ) and Lashawn Merritt (USA, 2008 champ) were both genuinely happy for Wayde Van Niekerk (South Africa).

  • That One Guy

Rant: This headache is lingering way too long. Ugh.
