  • Rant: I realized yesterday that I heard the gunshots on Saturday night that must have killed Seth Conrad Rich – even my fitbit shows me as being awake at 4:11am-4:30 that night. At first I’d thought it was fireworks, but then I’d realized it sounded more like gunshots. Feel very badly about having woken up to hear such a horrible thing. There were a lot of shots fired…
rave/rant? I finally hooked up with a guy friend Ive had a mini crush on for the past few weeks. The problem is that he recently broke up with someone, and so I know Im his rebound conquest. Im a little unsure of where things will go from here…

    • I’m with a rebound hookup three years later. There’s hope!

    • Andie302

Yeah I met accountering about six weeks after his separation. I tried to tell him to just call me in a year, but he wasn’t having it 🙂 My advice: don’t assume anything, instead try to keep an appropriate amount of conversation going about the topic. By appropriate I mean: Don’t ask him if he wants to get married, but if, in a month or so, you’re feeling like you’d like to be exclusive, then bring it up. And please keep us posted!

      • +1 to “don’t assume anything… topic.” I broke up with someone a couple of weeks before I met my now-fiance. We then immediately went into a year of long distance and here we are four years later. You never know!

      • +1 – I met my boyfriend (partner? I hate the term boyfriend) very, very shortly after he and his ex split. I went into it thinking I was a rebound and didn’t really put much consideration/effort in beyond having fun. 2+ years later and we are living together.
Having said that, I dated another guy prior to him who had apparently been separated from his ex for a year (it was complicated) and he was in no way shape or form over her.
There’s no hard and fast rules in love and relationships. Just go with the flow and see what happens! In many cases (especially when the previous relationship was a marriage), things were over well and truly long before the actual separation. Other times, someone ‘seems’ over it, but they aren’t. Only time and your personal interaction can tell. Good luck!

        • Andie302

I’m with you on hating “boyfriend”! I feel like I’m 15 again, and not in a good way

        • Living/ parenting together, he’s definitely your partner! 🙂 I love the term partner. It carries so much meaning.

        • I prefer the term partner as well. We live together, make life decisions together, support one another. He’s so much more than a boyfriend.

        • i prefer the term partner too! as a lesbian, it makes the “no, she’s my girlfriend as in we are dating and live together” conversation somewhat avoidable. I love that in Europe, people often refer to their husbands and wives as partners.

      • Thanks! I will keep everyone posted he he

    • So my rebound hookup (was really supposed to be a one night stand) has stuck around for over 7 years now with us being married for 5 of them. It doesn’t always work but I wouldn’t dismiss it.

    • My husband was a rebound that stuck too. Six years and one baby later, we are still going strong. Sometimes it is just a rebound; sometimes those relationships have lasting power.

    • Add me to the list of people who married a “rebound.” I met him two days after a breakup and that ended up being perfect timing.

  • Rant: People responding to/reposting the article about the people who shot at police on Alabama Ave last night without actually reading the article. People (mainly just the people reposting it from Fox News..surprised?) are talking about #blacklivesmatter in such a hateful and discriminatory way. There is no indication in any of the articles that it had anything even to do with that.

  • Quotia Zelda

    Rave: It’s Eldest Zelda’s birthday!
Rave: We had a great birthday dinner last night, complete with Pokemon hunting.
Rant: Dad is having (minor) surgery today.
Rant: Off to Atlanta tomorrow for a business trip. It’s just not my favorite place.
Rave: At least the work part will be interesting.

  • Decided to quit driving for lyft. Not worth the prospect of having my insurance cancelled. Time is better spent lifting than lyfting anyway.
Rant: my temporary tags are expiring tomorrow. The dealership never got back to me about some of the paperwork until Friday. I wish I could would have just done it all myself and not pay their fee. It would have been more efficient.
Revel; they’re filling up my tank for my trouble

    • Aw, that endeavor ended quickly :[

      • I was making about 15/hr which was okay but ridesharing insurance with geico was very high. Erie was cheaper….$70/mo more than I’m paying now but I’m not going to be driving during the school year and their personal insurance is more than I’m paying geico now. I’m okay with it though because I wasn’t loving the gig but it was a decent way to keep busy.

  • Rant: Another random attack by a group of the Usual Teenage Suspects on Metro yesterday in the middle of the afternoon. Last summer I’d given up any pretense of shared community and just started immediately doing anything possible to get out of the vicinity of any groups of teenagers. This summer I’ve found I no longer feel the least bit bad about it.

  • Rant: Got very little sleep last night due to coughing. Sent myself into a panic when the coughing fits started occurring every few minutes. I nearly went to the ER but decided to call my mom instead. She advised me to drink some tea which calmed me down a bit and helped soothe my throat. I still did not sleep well, I pretty much woke up on the hour with coughing fits, but at least it wasn’t every few minutes.

Rave/Rant: Second Doctor’s appointment for today. I’m annoyed that I have to go back, but I just want to feel better. Nothing I’m taking is helping.

    • Aw man! I hope you get to feeling better soon – PS – I find a cup of tea with whiskey or brandy before bed often helps when I’m sick/have a cold (as long as you’re not on meds that would be a contraindication and you’re sufficiently hydrated!)

    • That One Guy

      Unsolocited Advice:
-Take some theraflu (powder that you make into a hot drink) to help with any aches and pains and potentially suppress urge to cough. Also you can talk to your doctor about a prescription for tessalon perle (is a cough suppressant) but be aware of the side effects.
-Chloraseptic makes cough drops that help numb your throat in case you have a sore throat from the coughing.
-Lastly buy some pedialyte for hydration (it also has zinc).

    • Whooping cough?
The perles helped me for a day, but the only thing that really controls a cough is codeine. Well, I suppose enough whisky and honey would do the trick, but you’d have to decide if the hangover is worth it.

      • in my panic I actually got up and started sipping Jack Daniels from the bottle. It did help a bit. I’ve been drinking hot toddies with whisky, lemon tea and honey. Maybe I need to change my proportions.

    • “I nearly went to the ER but decided to call my mom instead.”
Hahahaha I have done this more than once, and then I always feel bad for my mom but usually realize I didn’t need to go to the hospital and incur massive bills either. I hope your doctor’s appointment is useful later, otherwise I’d strongly recommend going to a different urgent care or maybe switching doctors. You clearly are not just having allergies or a cold…

      • I felt bad for calling her at midnight, but she’s usually up at the time as it is. Thank goodness I came to my wits and did not go to the hospital. Not worth the bills, or sitting in the ER alone for hours upon end. I would’ve done Urgent care, but none were open at that time.

    • Clueless

Ugh, cough fits are the worst. They say rest is the best medicine but of course it’s impossible to do that. I had similar symptoms last summer and I think wdc is right… I was given a prescription for a codeine-type of med after visiting the doc; it was the only thing that calmed down the cough and let me sleep. Get well soon!

  • Rant: Conference calls where too many people are trying to talk at once, which results in everyone getting cut off and difficulty hearing what the hell is being said.
Rant: Feeling really fat lately. Need to get back to tracking my food, which I’ve been avoiding for oh, the last 8 months or so!
Rave: Some fun planned throughout the week and weekend

  • I Dont Get It

Slightly Uncomfortable Rave?: I saw my mailman on the street and he asked if I got my package last week (it was Lizzy being returned from the *spa*). I said yes and then he said I’m sorry your dog died. Hmmm…yes the package was labeled “Cremated Remains” but…
Rave: It’s Amazon Prime Day! I really need an electric pressure cooker, right? So tempting!
Rant: I made a reference to Pokemon Go this morning in a staff meeting and nobody knew what I was talking about. Please, Baby Boomers, will you hurry up and retire!

    • So you’re back from the Midwest? How is Lucy doing?

      • I Dont Get It

It’s a different bark but her bark has returned which I guess is a good thing! She’s also eating again without prompting!

    • I hope Lucy is doing okay, and I’m sorry about the mailman thing but I really like how you’re referring to it as the *spa*.

    • I’m pretty surprised no one would know about Pokemon Go, considering the media has latched onto it like nothing else and it’s been all over the news for various reasons.
That’s nice that the mailman cared enough to talk to you, at least. I’m sorry though, I’m sure it just brought it back up for you.

      • There aren’t many of us left it seems but some people actually are very busy with actual life tasks. I didn’t hear about Pokemon Go until yesterday, and I still don’t really know what it is. I *think* it’s an app that turns adults into children but I’m not 100% sure.

        • ha! Yeah, I don’t get it, or the fuss around it.

        • I’m not a baby boomer, but didn’t hear about it until yesterday either. And it was only vaguely on my radar; I didn’t really know what it was until today’s discussion.

        • I am a firm believer in people making time for things they’d like to do. If you’d like to be “very busy with actual life tasks” that’s great, but I wouldn’t pass too harsh of judgement for other people not seeming busy enough. I worked full-time while I was getting my Master’s and still made time for myself (but then maybe I’m a little dorky — I heard about Pokemon Go last year and have been eagerly awaiting its release).

        • Yeah that was my point, sort of, but I suppose it depends on what you define as “actual life tasks”. I suppose watching the news/reading the news doesn’t count in that, which is fine for you, but I heard about its launch through paying attention to the news media, which is why I’m a bit surprised at people that haven’t even heard about it yet.

    • oh gosh. I work in cybersecurity and I’m actually going to have to write a white paper about it.

    • Yes, you need an electric pressure cooker. I LOVE mine.

      • I Dont Get It

In the reviews people refer to making potatoes or rice, which I don’t eat or cooking for large families which I don’t have. I still kinda want one…how do you use yours?

        • I soak beans the night before, refrigerate them in the morning, then use the pressure cooker to have them ready in ten minutes. Great for black beans (tacos or salsa) and garbanzo beans (hummus). I also use it to cook red or brown lentils (daal, etc.). I don’t cook very large portions but at least enough to last a few days. It’s just me eating them. You really don’t need an ‘electric’ pressure cooker. A regular you one place on the stove works just fine!

          • HaileUnlikely

Thanks for the tip. I didn’t know stovetop pressure cookers existed. I believe that the sole purpose of high-wattage small kitchen appliances is to entice spouses, roommates, and the like to overload electrical circuits and trip circuit breakers.

          • Stovetop pressure cookers shouldn’t exist. They terrify me. I assume the electric ones are just waiting to explode your face off too.

        • my S.O. uses it for every type of meat. Delicious pulled pork, chicken wings, we’ve made curries. Anything you need to break down quickly or infuse flavor into. It kind of does the work that might take 6 hrs in a slow cooker in one hour.

        • Slow cook beef short ribs in mine. Season short ribs, add in onions and peppers and your favorite bbq sauce. Cook on low for 6 hours, turning occasionally. Serve old yellow rice with vegetables.

    • That One Guy

Woot (an Amazon owned site) is also having something today too.

    • amazon prime day – uff. bought some stainless steel pans and a portable AC unit #shame

  • Bear

Rant: Crappy sleep lately. I think I need to cut back on sugar or something – 6 hours of sleep a night isn’t cutting it.
Rave: Taking a long weekend to go visit family. I haven’t been home since I went down for a couple days right after Christmas, and probably won’t be back until next year sometime, so it will be good to see everyone. It’s going to be a really busy trip and I’ll probably come back exhausted, but it’ll be worth ti.
Rant: So much to wrap up this week before we leave.
Rave: The bear cub is practicing his kung fu moves in utero. So active!

  • That One Guy

Rant: Am I in a nihilist funk?!?
Rave: Walked a couple of miles this morning before getting into the office.
What do you usually eat if you want a light lunch?

  • hammers

want to rant, but too much to rant.

  • Rave: In less than two weeks I never, ever have to see my horrendous neighbors again!!!!

Rant: I actually love my house and will miss it, but know selling was the right choice.

Question: does anyone know of a cleaning company that will do a move out clean on a Saturday?

  • Rant: I actually recognized the picture of the missing dog in the missing dog story before I even opened the page. I really hope they find her.
Rave: The baby belly is starting a little earlier this time around. Probably helps that I haven’t lost as much weight from morning sickness.
Rave: I love that my wife (who is a die-hard meat eater) doesn’t even bat an eyelash when I tell her that we’re having either tofu or tempeh stirfry tonight. She has come a long way in the past few years.

  • Rave: Really good conversation with a friend last night.
Rant: Think I’ve developed some disordered eating habits. Things are changing in my life (or at least I’m trying to change things), and I feel like I have to be on constant watch at work to make sure I don’t lose control of my life to the job (like co-workers). So…I don’t eat lunch, or don’t eat enough to qualify as a lunch. No bueno, especially since I’m down 20 pounds since this time last year. Time to eat lunch.
Revel: Enough self-knowledge to recognize this and change my behavior.

    • Maybe make Sunday evening your cooking time. Create one large meal, place it in multiple containers, and bring them to work each day. Also bring a container of trail mix (nuts/cereal/dried cranberries) and keep it in your work cube all week. Make sure you eat breakfast and dinner as well! If you can actually leave the office to enjoy lunch, all the better (outside on a bench!!!). It will clear your mind, refresh you, and make you more productive when you return. Anyway, 20 pounds is a LOT to lose to stress (I thought my -5 lbs are bad!). You could also benefit from a therapist/psychiatrist probably. Glad you had a great convo with your friend though. Wishing you the best! Maybe visit a park this weekend?

      • I do a variation on this. I don’t like eating the same thing every day, so I tend to cook large batches of a lot of different things, then freeze in single servings. I have a vacuum sealer so the food lasts forever in the freezer. That way, I can pull out different things to take to lunch on any given day. I try to base one day of cooking on a few base ingredients. For example, I’ll pressure cook (or slow cook) a bag of beans, then make chili, bean soup, beans and rice, bean burgers. I also make huge batches of tomato/pasta sauce and freeze in 1 cup increments. Then I can use that for pasta, or add different spices to make it more Latin flavored, or add red peppers to use as a sauce over fish. Even when I think I’m out of food, I always have something in the freezer to grab.

        • Great idea – how long does it take though? And how much freezer room do you have? I assume you wait for your food to cool down before placing in the plastic.

          • cooking often takes me about half a day, but I can optimize it by doing it while I’m cleaning. Most of what I do doesn’t need a lot of hands on work, but can take some time (for example, my pasta sauce sits on the stove for hours). I also will slow cook beans overnight (I’m a veg, but I bet you could do this with meat as well), then put stuff together in the morning.
I have a side-by-side freezer and it really doesn’t take up too much room. And I do wait for stuff to cool before I vacuum it. For soups, I freeze individual portion in regular tupperware, then when it is frozen, I vacuum seal it.

  • Revel – was on one of the ‘new’ Metros. Love them. Clean and nice!
Rant – A young couple with their child was also on the Metro. They fed the toddler chicken from their giant chicken bucket and dropped all the bones on the floor…of the Metro. Gross.
Revel – a ~50 woman walked onto the Metro immediately after they walked off. She saw one of the chicken bones and instead of walking away, sat down, reached into her purse for a napkin, and picked it up to throw away later. Wow.
Rant – more teens littering on the street. Revel – my Roomie said to one of them, “Hey, you don’t need to litter – there’s a trashcan right there” and he actually said “Thank you,” and picked up one piece of his litter and threw it away.

Rant – mixup with the time of my hot date in DuPont. Revel – heard pleasant music and walked over to the DuPont Circle and just sat around reading the news (on my phone). The gentleman nearby me was playing a trumpet and it sounded soooo nice!!!!

  • Rave: I leave tomorrow for an epic road trip that will end with me starting a temporary job for 4 months in Denver!
Rant: Last day at my current job (for now, I’m taking a leave of absence) – I’m going to miss the great people I work with!
Rave: My friends and colleagues are incredible and have been immensely supportive of me going off to a swing state to do my part to keep Donald J. Trump from being our next president.
Rant: Packing and preparing for a long trip is exhausting!
Rave: Thank you to PoPVille for all your tips on temporarily renting out a condo. I found two great people to stay in my place for a few months.

  • Andie302

Query: Is an amazon echo worth it? Family has one and the only thing I’ve seen it used for is music, but they do also get tidal information on it. Anyone have one and love it, or just not use it as much as you thought you would? They’re $129 today 🙂

  • Rave for the very kind cab driver today – last name Al-Haraz – who returned my forgotten cell phone and refused any gift in return. Little acts of kindness.
