“Assault on 2nd and Todd Pl NE

I’m writing to let the PoPville community know of an assault that happened to me at approximately 6:45am this morning [Thursday] as I was getting into my car to head to work. A man was sitting on the sidewalk near my car mumbling incoherently. While unlocking my car door he approached me from behind and threw a rock at me, striking my elbow. He ran away quickly while I jumped into my car. Luckily the rock missed my head and I only have a swollen arm to deal with. He did not try to snatch my purse.

I filed a police report and they are on the hunt for him during their normal patrol of the neighborhood. He is a black male, approx 5’6″, 140 lbs, age 30-35. He was wearing a white t-shirt and dark pants. He ran down 2nd St NE towards McKinley Tech High School. I believe he probably ducked into the alley parallel to T St. or T St.

Stay safe!”

  • Is this sort of thing happening more often than usual or does it just feel like it?

    • Definitely just feels like it. If you think about it, this makes one visibly mentally unstable person throwing a rock at someone that I’ve heard about all year. If you’d asked me, before this post, “how often do you think crazy homeless people throw things at people in the city?” I would’ve said way more than one a year.

  • This happened to me 3 years ago on 7th St NE a half block south of H street. I was walking down the sidewalk at about 7pm, when a man walked quickly out of the alley way and mumbled something incoherent. I turned slightly so I could see him in my peripheral vision, and then he threw a large rock/piece of concrete at me, missing me by about a foot. He ran toward H, and I ran the opposite direction onto the street so I could be more visible. I called the cops, but by the time they arrived dude was gone.

  • Not a rock, but a brick – on July 22, 2016:
On today’s date at approximately 10:45am, First District members responded to the 8th and L Streets, Northeast, in reference to an assault. Upon arrival, the victim reported while walking, a male suspect
approached her and struck her in the face with a brick. A non-involved witness observed the assault, chased after the suspect northbound on 8th Street, NE, then westbound on Florida Avenue, NE, and lost sight of the suspect in the area of 3rd
and M Streets, Northeast. The victim sustained injuries to her face and was transported by DCFEMS to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 30’s, light complexion, 5’8, slim build, last seen wearing a gray sweat suit.

  • Sounds like the same person who we encountered on Weds this week, throwing rocks from the north bank of the Anacostia river at rowing shells that were passing between Navy Yard and Pennsylvania Ave bridges. He had a pipe then too. Some rowers spotted him yesterday near the north riverbank again late Thursday afternoon and alerted police, but I guess they didn’t locate him.
