You, Tree, Are My Hero Vol. 8

tree

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Remember this tree near the Petworth playground on 8th? It was chopped down and left for dead… but not this tree. Growing strong… and this picture is from a while ago. Everytime I see it, it reminds me what resilience is all about….”

Ed. Note: I don’t literally think these folks are heroes along the lines of firefighters and emergency responders, apologies if that was not clear. You can see previous nominees here. Should you spot a quiet act of heroism along these lines please do send an email with a brief description and the neighborhood where it was witnessed to [email protected]

  • it should be noted that it was chopped off by a thieve who took a bike that was locked to the newly planted tree. Mad at the thieve, but also maddening that someone felt it was ok to chain a bike to what was a very slim growing tree.

You want to see resilience, try eliminating bindweed from your yard…

    • It can be done! And without chemicals, even. Just a constant vigilance for new shoots so you can pluck them before they mature and feed more energy to the colony underground. Took us almost 4 years, but we went from a complete, overgrown infestation to zero new vines for over a year now.

Yeah, I’ve pretty much eliminated it from our yard after 3 years. It partly involved putting down protective lining and then mulching over that whole thing. And yet still we’ll get a rogue one creeping up where a tree base is from time to time.

  • The awesome force of nature. Silent, too. Growing trees, the spheres orbiting about us (moon, Venus), et cetera!
