“Car crashed into the front of the Bemmi Hardware building 8am Sunday”

A reader reports:

“You’ve posted a few times about Bemmi Hardware — that always closed hardware store on the corner of 12th and Florida NW. We might be seeing some changes there soon — this morning around 8am a car jumped the curb and crashed into the front of the building. Or at least there didn’t seem to be any commotion when I left the house for a bagel run at 8am and the accident had happened by the time I rolled by at 8:23. The storefront looks pretty badly damaged — they will at least need to do a repair job. The good news is people who looked like the owners were there so it isn’t as abandoned as it seems.”

  • WOW the owners were literally fixing up the storefront for HOURS on saturday! They had the sidewalk roped off and everything. I thought, I’ve never seen that place open. What awful timing!

    • The crash was actually on Saturday morning, around 5:30am. The fix-up you saw was because of the crash. I live across the street and the crash woke a lot of the neighbors up. Luckily it didn’t look like the driver was hurt, according to a neighbor who went out.

  • The OP post about that happening on Sunday is WRONG.!!!!! I was in my old neighborhood on Saturday and was on my way to a cookout when I and my Father saw this damage being repaired on the building. Also I have lived in this neighborhood since 1964 and that store has always been mostly closed and hardly ever open no matter what name was on the sign. I guess it is a curse to open a business in that building.

    • OK, well then that would make sense that I saw them working on the storefront saturday afternoon (after the accident). If not, what a crazy coincidence.

  • Why does this happen so much? Two other buildings were hit by cars in DC last week.

    • … at first i wondered if it was people driving drunk since the metro is closing early these days. but i think this was a little too late in the morning.

  • It isn’t vacant — the building is rented out to tenants. They keep the building up.

NO idea on what the tax dodge is but has to be worth it.

  • If I’m not mistaken, the Bemmis live in the apartment above the store.
