“the tune brings joy to my heart” where’s it coming from?

“Dear Popville:

In recent days, from my window in Park View I’ve heard church bells sounding the Westminster Quarters, the clock bells melody in E major typical to Episcopal and Anglican churches.

The sound comes from south of Park View, perhaps near Howard, Shaw, Ledroit, Bloomingdale, Eckington, or thereabouts.

Anyone know which church is playing this and whether it’s a new development? I can’t believe this has been going on every 15 minutes for long without me noticing it, because the tune brings joy to my heart — remembrances of the bells at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine during my childhood in uptown Manhattan.”

  • Catholic cathedrals ring the Angelus bells at Noon and 6 pm daily. Is that what you’re hearing, perhaps?

    • I should have added: are you near the Catholic cathedral, St. Matthew? (I’m not familiar with the area you described.) Also the Basilica at CUA rings them.

  • I’m in Bloomingdale, and I’ve heard them every half hour. For some reason, I assumed Howard because of the direction, but not positive.

  • Just came here to say I love posts like this!

  • I’ve heard them, too., in Shaw, but they sound at least half a mile away. Would love to know the answer.

  • I live near the Columbia Heights/Park View border and just noticed the bells for the first time a couple of days ago. I have no idea where they’re coming from, but I also really love them and hope they continue!

  • I’m at Lamont and Sherman and I hear them too. I’ve never noticed this before and don’t know whether it’s new or not.

  • Blithe

There are bells at Howard — I think it might be the clock at the Founder’s Library. I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard them do the Westminster Quarters. I don’t think it’s as frequently as every 15 minutes though.

  • They are indeed the from the clock tower at Howard’s Library. I loved them when I was a student there 25 years ago. I think the inconsistent chiming is just a maintenance issue
