  • I walked out and talked to the police at about 9:05. They didn’t inspire a lot of confidence that they had any handle on this situation or crime in this neighborhood in general. I lay this at Bowser’s feet.

    • Less than 30 minutes after the shooting, you felt that because the police were not able to give you a satisfactory answer, it was time to blame the Mayor? Get a grip dude.

      • Well, it’s not like it was the first shooting in this area. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of vision or leadership (or just admitting there is a problem) coming from the mayor’s office, or the chief of police.

  • If this was an isolated incident, I’d agree that 30 minutes isn’t enough time to blame the mayor, but since Petworth is essentially a war zone right now with shootings every few days, I’d expect a sense of urgency from city hall and from MPD. I’ve seen no efforts to get a grip on the rampant violence as of late, and I only expect it to get worse in the summer months.

    • I don’t agree that “Petworth is essentially a war zone right now” and I’m pretty sure “shootings every few days” is not accurate either. That being said, it is pretty scary to have someone shot in your alley. On the up side, I’ve actually noticed a lot more police in this area this past month; lots of bike officers (I read somewhere that they were deploying more) and also marked cars. The other day, on this very block, there was a small group of neighbors gathered and a marked unit rolled by slowly and then parked a few houses up the street.

If you read the crime posts here, it’s pretty accurate.
