Metro Mutts staying open on H Street, Closing on Barracks Row

508 H St, NE will remain open

On Friday when we spoke about H Street and gentrification there were fears that Metro Mutts could be in trouble when Petco arrives. Thanks to a reader for passing on the update:

“After several years of operating retail out of two Capitol Hill locations, we have decided to put our full retail energy and concentration into just one brick & mortar location. Our choice of the H Street shop was primarily driven by the larger footprint, our long-standing relationship with the neighborhood (the owners have lived off H Street since before MM was opened), and the nearby proximity to our close friends & business partners Spot On Training . With this in mind, we are closing our SE location at 407 8th St SE when the lease comes up for renewal in June.

Our flagship store at 508 H St NE remains open and there are NO plans to close or back down in any way, as a result of Petco’s planned arrival in the neighborhood this summer. If you hear rumors to the contrary, we hope you will help spread the word that Metro Mutts NE is here to stay for as long as our loyal customers will support us! We are committed to not only supporting other local small businesses in our neighborhood but fighting to keep our own small business going strong!

We’ve loved being a presence in the Eastern Market area, and remain fully committed to serving those customers who live closer to the SE store. We hope you’ll visit our flagship store on H Street and take advantage of our NEW home-delivery service. Our Pet Services – dog walking and in-home cat sitting – are a big part of Metro Mutts’ success and the great reputation we’ve earned over the past 6 years. We look forward to expanding our service footprint to new neighborhoods very soon and exploring the possibility of adding new services (thanks for your feedback on our recent survey).

We now also have a team focused solely on Community Outreach. They are busy organizing and participating in pet-friendly events in the community, so we hope to see you and your pets at an event soon!

Finally, with home delivery successfully launched, a streetcar that stops right in front of our H Street store, and an enthusiastic retail team committed to meeting your every need – wherever you live – we are feeling bright and excited about the future.

We hope you are too, and look forward to seeing you again soon,

The Metro Mutts Family”

  • Howl to the Chief is a better store anyway, so this will motivate me to walk the extra few blocks. But I will miss seeing Metro Mutts there.

  • I got this in an email this morning and was super relieved! I live a block away from Metro Mutts H St and I was very worried they would close. There is no question I will continue to be a loyal customer to them- especially after Petco opens!

  • My dog will be heartbroken. Every time we walk down 8th street, he demands to walk through Metro Mutts.

  • I will miss Metro Mutts on 8th Street! I don’t blame them for moving though. Right outside their door is where vagrants congregate. Not such a great spot.

  • Bummer. My hubby picks up our newfies’s food there, and they walked us through about a gajillion options when she was having tummy trouble. The H St location doesn’t really work for us, so we’ll have to find a new pet shop that carries Fromms.

    • We would love to deliver Fromm right to your door! Have you seen that we now offer delivery through a partnership with District Takeout bicycle courier service?

    • Wagtime (9th & M SE) carries Fromm and can special order any food you need if they don’t have it in stock!
