  • Is that the spot where the hardware store used to be?

    • It is. I believe it’s always had trouble keeping tenants. I assume it’s the rent since it seems central and spacious, though perhaps not so bright.

      • I think the hardware store was there for several years — maybe the quick turnover has been just with the tenants since then?

        • This isn’t where the hardware store was- it is two doors down from it. What’s now in the old hardware store space is Cosmo Nail Bar, which was a major gut job and looks great.

As for Adams Morgan Restaurant and Cafe, it is a gem. Helen is the owner and works her tail off all hours. She’s been in the space since at least 2009, which is when I moved nearby. Great for simple items like baked goods, coffee and breakfast/lunch!

Black Jack has drafts for $3 on their happy hour, with significantly better beers, and it runs til 8PM (except on Friday), so you don’t have to sprint there after work. That is unless by “can’t beat” they mean exclusively in Adams Morgan.

Maybe the crowd has thinned out some, but the last time I went to Black Jack, it took 45 minutes just to get to the bar to order a beer.

45 minutes to get TO the bar? Unless you were walking on your hands, or it was New Year’s Eve, that sounds awfully unrealistic for any place in the city.

    • Happy hours that last until 6:00 are not really happy hours at all in my book.

      • It’s until 10pm. The owner put 6pm by mistake – she’s new to sidewalk marketing 🙂

$3 brews until 10pm is worth checking out.

      • I came here to say the same thing. Unless you work in the city it’s impossible to be situated at a bar in Adams Morgan by 6pm!

Uhh, unless you work for the government or a non-profit in the city, it’s impossible to be in a bar by 6:00pm.

But it’s on 14th Street, so it’s almost certainly a hot mess all the time. Though I think it makes Adams Morgan that much more inviting.

  • Good coffee there too.
